Is it just me or is your bedroom the most neglected room in your home? We certainly have other rooms to work on, however my husband and I are feeling like our bedroom has been set aside on the priority list long enough. It’s time to make our room an official ‘grown up’ space. I’ve been scouring the internet looking for some inspirations and I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I like and how I want the end result to look and feel. Elegant, sophisticated, warm, comfortable, not too fussy, a mix of textures and neutral colours is essentially what I’m after. Is that too much to ask?
Although there are a number of things I don’t care for in this room, I do like the wallpaper. We also have similar coloured carpet (although hubs is wanting to rip it out and replace with hardwood) so this room has a relative feel to ours.
I like the bold linear stripes of the drapery and the simple, overall natural feeling of the room.
I really like the patterned, suzani coverlet at the end of the bed. Opposite of the previous image, I like the lush, elegant feel of the silk drapery. This room also reminds me of the sunlight that pours into our west facing bedroom.
This bedroom has a casual elegance to it. I really like the way the artwork is displayed layered against each other on the bedside tables. I also love the striped wallpaper adding a subtle pattern and interest to the room.
The simple mix of patterns in the area rug and blanket really appeal to me. I would however, prefer more substantial nightstands and something with storage.
I love the layers in this room with the nightstands in front of the bookshelves. Also loving the subtle geometric natural wallpaper.
The one image my husband has pulled to represent how he would like the bedroom to feel. Yes, I believe it’s important to collaborate on such decisions, so I’ve included this image into the mix. To be honest I think we are on the same page. Imagine that! Although financially we are not :)
I’ve given myself a deadline to finish this project. If I don’t, I know it will linger in the ‘things we would like to do’ pile for a very long time. I’m excited to get started!

Oh I love getting to see what you see and getting inside your head. The design process is so unique for everyone and it always amazes me what other people pick out of images.
For me its number 4. Hands down. The striped blanket? I die. The rug? Delish. The husband? Well, give him those gorgeous black french doors from his photo.
Now… make it work!

Hey Nyla,
I’m sorta loving that last image — strong upholstered headboards are so important to help make an impactful statement in a BR.
And I love the feel of the room….the bed is sooo cozy. Good Luck!!!

Happy to hear you’re doing this. Our bedroom is also by far THE most neglected room in the house.
I agree with Christine and I adore the last one for it’s less formal vibe. I’m not a ’boutique hotel look’ kinda gal and it was the use of soft colours & textures that appealed to me. The drapery however is the only thing I don’t think goes with the rest of the picture.
Now I cannot wait to see what you do!!

Yes! So not after a boutique hotel look but I do love drapery and we have 12′ of windows that are begging for some coverage. It’s a big space and I want a warm and inviting feel, not stark and bare. Decisions…decisions…!!

nyla, great post with loads of inspiration.
i am over-the-moon for that multi-striped blanket on the white coverlet in the 5th photo. We always have a white mattelasse coverlet in the summers, but i am feeling a huge need for punch of colour to go with. that is perfect!
anyhow, i wish you luck on your bedroom. i can’t wait to see what you end up choosing, you have such a wonderful style signature. don’t put it off, just go for it!

I love the floor lamps in the Elle Decor photo, b/c we don’t have room for anything more than 2 small nightstands.
Also, I notice the total lack of bed skirts. How to cover the box spring? Fitted sheet ? or?
Nyla Jan 18 2011 - 11:43 am
Yes, most people cover the box spring with a fitted sheet however many beds these days require only a mattress. Also, in several of these images the duvet/coverlet comes down over the bed to cover the mattress and box spring. It’s best to cover it up any which way you can!

there are many great elements in each photo you have shared here… I’m excited to see how your room is going to look… and having a deadline is a good idea!

Nyla,
Have you seen the Colette bed at crate and barrel. It is similar to the one in the last photo. Cory, may be on board for that one!
Love the blog. J
