MODERN. I’m not referring to the dictionary meaning but rather the feeling, the emotion or the lifestyle of a Modern interior. Vintage, retro, mid-century, classic, country. These have all been paired with the word Modern. This week I am exploring what Modern means with four people I admire and would love to introduce you to or if you already know them, for you to get to know them better.
An Interior Designer, collaborator, and someone who brings people together in a positive and creative way, Lisa Ferguson inspires me with her daily encouragement and insights all the way from Toronto. Recently founding Decor Mentor, Lisa is on the pulse of the design world and works hard to educate readers about the process and practices of Interior Design. I have had the pleasure of meeting Lisa a few times this year and more recently collaborating with her as one of the mentors over at Decor Mentor.
Thank you for sharing with us Lisa!
What is Modern Design?
If I said “ Modern Design”. What images and descriptors would immediately be brought to your mind? Mid Century Modern? Minimalism? Cold? Uncomfortable? Clean Lines?
Wikepedia describes moderism in architecture as “simplification of form and subtraction of ornament from the structure and theme of the building”.
When I think of modern design, these are the first four words that come to my mind.
Looking at Interiors by fabulous designers, I find myself using the word modern for a wide range of looks. These spaces from Amy Lau Design, West Architecture Studio and Nyla Free Designs would probably be considered ” modern” by most.
I tend to also call spaces with clean lines and modern shapes, “modern” design. Like the ones here from Pulp Design Studios, my work — Lisa Ferguson Interior Designs and Saavedra Design Studio. Would you agree?
There is so much sameness in modern products, so I wanted to share some great modern products that I am not tired of yet! Do they do anything for you?
What does modern design mean to you? Please share! We would love to hear from you.

Modern, minimalism, clean and simple ‘should’ be the new realism, no matter what direction your ‘preference’ in life/style is. Everyday, whether it be work, or play, we are surrounded by congestion and clutter. Our living space should be simple, a tranquil oasis and refuge from the reality of todays world, having the ability to ‘focus’ on what is important to each individual occupying the space. ‘Less is more’ means focusing on ourselves, simplifying our tasks and the ability to share ourselves with friends and family without the distractions. A ‘modern’ mindset and a minimalist lifestyle enhances our well being, and reality really means ‘life’ is too short. I’d like to add that a modern / minimalist mindset, is also good for the planet.

I agree with quite a bit here. To me Modern means: clean, fresh, minimalistic, uncluttered, clean lines. To sum it up its Scandinavian design, which some people consider IKEA style. I have always loved modern designs. I find the relaxing, soothing and fantastic to switch things around in for a newer and fresher look every year or so… alright every few months.

“I’d like to add that a modern / minimalist mindset, is also good for the planet.” I LOVE that you mentioned this Paul. I am hoping our society becomes less disposable!
