happy birthday dabble!

It’s day two of the Design Bloggers Conference in LA and I’m having a fabulous time meeting and seeing several social media friends and of course taking in lots of great info.

It was one year ago today, (during the time of the first Design Bloggers Conference) Dabble Mag launched and I found myself on the cover of the magazine. Crazy right?! (Read more about the cover shot) It was a pretty surreal moment and a special day all around as we launched into an exciting adventure of design, travel and food experiences from around the globe. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be part of such an amazing team of people.

This opportunity is a testament to my blog and the power of social media as that is how my position in Dabble came to be. You just never know who is watching you!

For the next 30 days follow us as we share highlights from the year, AND there’s an exciting giveaway to celebrate dabble’s first birthday coming down the pipe. Stay tuned for details or watch City Line March 8th to learn how you can enter to win a price valued at more than $10,000.00!

dabble issue 6: kids bedrooms

Have you had a chance to check out Dabble Issue 6 yet? I hope so! This issue’s Reality Check is tackling Kid’s Bedrooms, offering tips and pointers on things you need to know before embarking on the task to meet the needs of your little ones no matter how old.

This bedroom belongs to my youngest daughter and for a long time it was the only completed room in the house. During the photo shoot of my bedroom for Dabble Issue 2, we had a slight delay while electricians hung my new swag lamps so Lori was quick to jump on the chance to snap shots of my girls. (You can see photos of my oldest daughters room here.)

The Sadie print from Serena and Lily was my jumping off point. I love the watermelon colour combination and the mix of patterns, but wanting to add my own touch, I introduced olive coloured polka dot sheet set from Pottery Barn that I mixed with the floral pattern. I also purchased fabric from Designer Fabrics for accent cushions and euro pillows. The petite patterned wallpaper is Designers Guild (a now discontinued print) which I used as an over sized head board, framed in wide moulding purchased from a local hardware store. I painted it matte black, added touches of silver then roughed it up with sandpaper. I attached a wall decal to give off a shadow-like visual from the chandelier.

Classic ‘headless’ shot of little ‘M’ by Lori Andrews.

The nightstands are also mismatched. The left night table is an old piece with a fresh coat of paint. I would say it acted as a telephone table at one point in time. The round one on the right is new and has a pedestal style base. I ordered this one without really realizing how much it was. Oops! Lets just say it’s a keeper ;)

The colour palette and style of this room has lasted for three years now and I don’t anticipate changing it for another three, it has so much longevity. Great for my pocketbook…not so great for my interest and desire to create and change things!

design notes: 2.20.12

It’s Family Day here in Alberta so I’m enjoying an extra long weekend. I’ve got a long list of things I’d like to get done but I do plan to leave time to cuddle up and relax with my girls today.

Loving this image of a cozy and chic, family friendly living space.

• collage of illustrated artwork, frames are mismatched, sizes are different yet all are cohesive

• wall sconces add functional dimension to the wall

• space feels intimate and welcoming

ps. There’s a contest coming down the pipe that I’m hoping you’ll help me with. Stay tuned for more details!

friday fashion files

It’s a long weekend here in Canada. Are you going anywhere, or up to anything fun and exciting? I’ve been loving all the NY Fashion Week posts and images roaming around the internet, in particular, I came across this collage of fashion inspiration from the JCrew Spring 2012 collection. Much like the board an interior designer would put together. What a perfect idea to plan outfits for a trip!

Hope your weekend is super stylish.

blogging, or not…

While on a flight home from Toronto a few weeks ago I created a blog calendar. Browsing photos and ideas, I wrote a topic for each day until the end of March. Thrilled with myself, I opened my calendar Monday morning to admire my work and……nothing. In fact my whole calendar had been wiped out. All Nyla Free Designs work entries were now non existent. #cuethetears

After a two hour visit to the Apple store ‘special projects’ division and the nice young man bearing bad news early in the morning I walked away trying to remember my entire January. iCloud, you failed me.

My oldest daughter, bless her, loves to talk and the best part is she tells me everything. So a recent conversation goes something like this:

A: “Oh Mom, I hope you don’t mind if I deleted your meetings off our iPad”

Me: “What do you mean, deleted?”

A: “You know, ‘meeting with Judy’…things like that.”

Me: “So you deleted everything in the calendar that was mine?”

A: “Um, well, ohhhh….”

You’re probably wondering what I’m getting at. Well, iCloud is working perfectly fine amongst all Apple products in our household. Good news.

I re-created my blog calendar but as I look at what I’m ‘supposed’ to be blogging about tonight, it’s just not coming to me. The pretty pictures are there, but nothing else. No substance or giant level of inspiration. Sometimes you gotta leave it alone and walk away. Am I right?

Blog calendars are a great idea and I will endeavor to use mine, however….and that’s a BIG however. If it’s not right it’s not right and I’m not going to force it, for tonight anyway.

Do you use a blog calendar? How does it work for you? Any advice you can offer? How do you organize your blogs?

I love the dialogue a blog can bring so comment away and let me know your thoughts. And thanks for listening :)

feature store: three french hens

I couldn’t resist sharing two posts with you today. It was too hard to decide between Social Graces and this store. Both highlights during our trip to Nashville this time last year, while preparing for the launch of Dabble Mag. Three French Hens was the location of our photo shoot with St. Lola in the Fields and what we found inside was icing on the cake. Treasures galore, antiques and vintage items left me wanting to rent a u-haul and drive home with a truck load of goodies. Three French Hens is located 45 minutes outside of Nashville but well worth the drive, not only for the enthusiastic ladies who own the store but the many gems waiting to be picked up and brought home.

A little Valentine decor and display for you to enjoy today.

Happy Valentines Day!

feature store: social graces

A year ago this time I was in Nashville working on the launch issue of Dabble Mag. Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun. It’s been quite the year. I thought I’d go down memory lane today and highlight a favourite store we visited. Hillsboro Village is perfect for an afternoon stroll. Fabulous boutique shopping mixed with coffee shops, a gourmet pancake house and sundae parlour. What more could you ask for?

I am a huge fan and lover of stationary. Wrapping paper, note cards, gift tags, you name it, I love it, so you can only imagine how I felt when I walked through the door of Social Graces. This adorably stylish store not only carried fabulous merchandise, but the creativity in their displays had me from the sidewalk.

Jumbo paper flowers adorn the window.Stacked and hung from interesting objects like tree stumps and metal cages, merchandising becomes an art form.Pretty gift tags are displayed on top of straw in a wooden crate. Creatively displayed, wedding invitations embellish a dress form.Wrapping paper housed in bins, spools of ribbon in large glass jars.Notebooks in hanging wire baskets.I highly recommend adding Nashville to your list of places to visit. Blown away by it’s culture, modern vibe and incredibly friendly people, I can’t wait to go back. Learn more about this vibrant city in the launch issue of Dabble Mag and take a peek at ‘Dabble does Nashville – the making of’, a fun video of our time there.

design notes: 2.13.12

We don’t get too carried away with Valentines Day but it is a good excuse to score some chocolate, no? Instead of red and pink I thought I’d dive into the ice cream colours today for my notes.

Let’s kick it off with a little fashion love. How about this dress? It’s the colour I love the most. A muted terracotta, warm walnut, cherry wood kind of flavour, much like the sideboard and chairs in the interior below. So pretty.

But really, let’s talk about this room. Recently featured on desire to inspire, you will see the rest of this fabulous space here.

• it offers a subtle richness and soothing colour palette, much like ice cream!

• who can pass up a chevron area carpet ~ love!

• love the two tone mocha/ivory wall colours, a traditional approach to a modern space

• would love to see more homes with architectural details like coved ceilings.

This week is going to be sweet! Hope it’s off to a great start. Happy Monday!

friday fashion files

While in New York City last weekend we saw a lot of colour blocked styling going on in fashion. I took some shots while in Saks and wanted to share. Love this colour combination but honestly can’t see pulling it off in it’s entirety. Ended up purchasing bright coral pencil pants, paired with a taupe sweater, nude shoes and a statement necklace. Much safer I guess but I did step out and purchase coloured pants after all.

I suppose if you live in a warmer climate it’s easier to pull off, but combining all of these colours into one outfit is somewhat jarring in our very brown climate right now. Bring on the sun and warm weather I say! What do you think of this trend?

Have a stylish weekend!
