I recently completed a design in a box for a client that I wanted to share with you. I was really pleased with how it all came together and judging from the email back I think she was too.
“I just wanted to thank you for your work on my living room design. I love it and I am so excited to make some changes. I will take some photos when I have everything done so that you can see what it looks like.”
Let’s hope she does because I would love to see the finished room!
Here’s a peak inside her design in a box:
This particular client wanted a bright, unique and modern space. After reviewing colour options with her, I decided to have fun with orange, brick red and neutrals such as linen, sand and ivory. A new furniture layout and selections as well as fresh fabrics will not only brighten the room, but offer a comfortable space for two, or several when entertaining.
Hope you enjoyed this sneak peak!

Thank you to all who entered this years design in a box contest! I can’t tell you how much fun it was to receive each of the entries and I was surprised to see that bedrooms were the most popular room in the house that needed attention.
These are just a few of the words to describe the existing spaces:

Last year’s design in a box winner was Jennifer from Nicole Jane Home so to give you a glimpse at your potential winnings here is a sneak peak at what was inside of her’s.
Jennifer has a long and narrow shaped living room with a lovely bay window and feature fireplace. The challenge was not only in the arrangement of furniture, but also with the number of people she wanted to comfortably seat as well as the fact that they have animals that like to be part of the action.
I won’t tell all the details of what I ended up creating because it was specifically designed for Jennifer and her space. I do know she is already busy putting a few of the ideas into action and the rest will come when time and budget permit. I can’t wait to see how this room takes shape. I may be able to share a few progress photos soon though, right Jennifer?
The art of brainstorming with fabrics swatches and paint colours.
Here’s what Jennifer had to say:
“Nyla has an incredible ability to bring everything together with such style. I never would have come up with the fresh design she created for my living room. She mixed colours, textures, and shapes to give me the vision I needed to get started. I can’t wait to put it all together. Her attention to detail was carried all the way through the process, right down to the stunning box that I received containing carpet and fabric samples, vision boards, paint swatches and implementation guides—it was like Christmas morning around here when it arrived in the mail.”
Thank you Jennifer for your kind words! I had so much fun putting this together for you.
You can learn more by popping over to design in a box. It’s a great way to get started on the process of design if you don’t have the budget to hire a designer for one on one help, like to shop and do things yourself or live outside the Calgary area and like the look of Nyla Free Designs. This will give you everything you need in order to confidently pull your room together.
My sincere thank you to all those who visit my blog, comment and encourage me along the way. Good luck to all those who enter!

The winner of a room makeover with their very own Design in a Box is ~
JENNIFER FINDLAY!!
Here is Jennifer’s dilemma ~
Hi Nyla…If you saw my living room, you would gasp in horror! It’s a long rectangle room running east to west, with a large turret/bay of 5 windows on the east end. The fireplace is on the south wall facing the front entryway. The room is only wide enough to comfortably fit a large couch with side tables. I have no idea how to make this room work. It’s also stuck in the 90’s with deep port-coloured walls that give it Ralph Lauren vibe. The furniture is a crazy mix of styles. I’ve lived with it this way for 10 years because I can’t figure it out. Help!
Well Jennifer I am excited to get you out of the 90′s and into something fabulous! I’ll be emailing you with the next step.
Again, a BIG thank you to everyone who entered.
(*this is a $95.00 value via phone to review and discuss further your room of choice and any questions you might have. If you wish, an in-home consultation can be scheduled within the Calgary area where this amount will be applied to the hourly rate of Nyla Free Designs.)
I had so much fun designing a bedroom for this young girl! Her English roots, quirky attitude and a sense of style really helped to drive the creative forces behind many of my decisions.
The jumping off point for me was the bedding. I immediately went to Designers Guild and found a lovely wide stripe with soft, yet crisp colours. I was thrilled to find out that Layers and Layers carries the full Designers Guild line of bedding which means it is easily purchased here in Canada.
Here’s a sneak peak at what’s inside!
My goal in this vibrant young girls bedroom was to combine, patterns and colours in a way that was not matched or coordinated. I wanted a room that felt European and eclectic in style, while at the same time warm and comfortable for a growing girl.
I was thrilled to hear that she loves it and is eager to get going with her new project. Hopefully I will be able to show you a before and after!
You can see other Design in a Box samples here and be sure to enter the contest where you could win your very own room makeover!
If you’ve been curious to know more about design in a box and see what secrets and special things exist inside, well here is a sneak peak into a recent project!
A great room that needs to be family friendly as well as a comfortable space to entertain was the goal when pulling this space together. Using existing sofas and paint colour, we created a warm and inviting space using textured fabrics and subtle patterns. The completed room will take on a modern country feel with a slight french twist to co-ordinate with art and accessories in an adjacent room.
The box is filled with concept boards, floor plan and fabric samples to help you complete your room. All items are detailed so you know exactly what it is, where to buy it, and how much it costs. You’ll be all set to jump right in and start decorating with confidence!
Enjoy!
