experience: calgary stampede 2014

The Calgary Stampede has once again come to an end and each year we seem to be joining in the fun more than in years passed. The Stampede is a culture like no other. The entire city is involved with pancake breakfasts, western wear for all ages (even if, and especially if you aren’t a cowboy), beer tents galore, bull riding (whether you’re in the rodeo or not), lunches that never end and all work seems to slow down for what has become “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. Those are tall boots to fill! but one thing’s for sure, Calgary has a lot of pride in it’s city, people and vibrancy. Don’t let the “cowboy theme” fool you. This is an internationally recognized event with high caliber concerts, as well as fireworks and a Grandstand production every night. Even though locals have been known to run for the hills when the Stampede rolls in, there is no denying the amazing spirit of the city for these ten days in July.

Here are some of my Stampede highlights via Instagram.

palm springs perfect

We’re back from our spring break vacation in Palm Springs. It’s the second year we’ve gone and it won’t be our last. We spent the majority of our days poolside, soaking up the sun, lounging with magazines, word search puzzles and music… perfection. The girls were in the water more than they were out, showing off hand stands, dives, back flips, and trying out their underwater synchro moves. Me, with camera close by at all times, managed to capture some ‘moments’ if you will. The smaller details in a larger picture capture more of the story than expected.

Sunglasses poolside Sunglasses and a pool… a match made in heaven.

Heart shape found poolside A heart shaped dry spot on the pool deck my daughter spotted and quickly photographed. I love hearts!

Underwater Underwater kisses between sisters.

Reflections in sunglasses of midcentury modern house A reflection of the mid-century modern home we stayed at through the lens of my husbands aviators.

Palm Trees, Palm Springs A perfect row of palm trees.

Eyelashes, triangle shaped fresh out of the pool I loved how our younger daughters eye lashes configured into triangles after being in the water.

Splash I seriously can not stop looking at this image. The water is a second home for our oldest and this photo embodies her love of it.

I adore taking photos. I’m no pro, but I’ll keep learning and practicing in an effort to continue capturing moments like these.

trend from decorex: sculpted

While across the pond last September for the London Design Festival during BlogTour London we visited Decorex, the UK’s premier luxury design and interiors show. I couldn’t help but notice the incredible number of sculpted pieces, whether furniture, lighting or accessories, it was a predominant design element in numerous booths.

We’ve come through a ‘phase’ if you will of boxy, square, clean lined and somewhat minimal however there’s a movement towards added detail and shapes with softer lines and curves, and I like it.

What do you think? Are you ready to embrace a softer side of design?

Take a closer look at these great lines here: Graham and Green, Ochre, Julian Chichester, William Yeoward, Louise Bradley, Cox London

experience: london hotel citizen M

I’m kicking off the first of many BlogTour London posts with a thank you to one of our sponsors of the event, Citizen M. Let’s be honest, us designer types are a little picky when it comes to hotels. Not only do we like our ideal location, cozy beds and amenities but we love a style and aesthetic to give our sensory palette a nice hit of inspiration.

Citizen M offers all that, a savvy price point and more. While considered a boutique style hotel, the lobby area is spacious, inviting and cordons off well designed areas to mingle, eat, drink, relax, work alone or even in a group. The rooms are suitable for one to two people and have everything you need to start and end your day comfortably. I slept like a baby!

Almost everything in the hotel is digital from check-in to raising your blinds, yet this does not discount the importance of people. Any staff member I came in contact with was helpful, friendly and also worldly. I noticed several accents other than British, which added a level of sophistication and allure I loved.

In an effort to capture the mood of being there in person I ‘instagramed’ my way through the hotel. Welcome to Citizen M. Details matter! Accommodating plugs for all is simply brilliant.

They’ve even added a handmade touch to each room. Adorable.

I won’t even go into the alarm clock options. You’ll have to go there to hear for yourself, but let’s just say it’s pretty wild ;)

Are you a citizen? Watch the video below to find out.

Located in Bankside, which is ideal with easy access to tube stations and of course a cab ride is just a ‘hail’ away. Step outside the hotel lobby and walk to the River Thames with views of the magnificent London architecture.

If your travels are taking you to the likes of Amsterdam, Paris, New York or Glasgow, Citizen M has locations in these fine cities as well as London.

Thank you Citizen M for believing in BlogTour London, the importance of bloggers and what we bring to the social media scene. You were a fantastic host and a welcome place to return to at the end of our amazing and busy days.

experience: santa monica

As summer draws to a close in the next few weeks and the school bell is ringing today, I’m getting back into the swing of things after a wonderful few months of having my girls off school. The summer was busy. We didn’t experience too many lazy days and I’m not one to get excited about ‘back to school’. Truthfully I could use a few more weeks. But alas it has come to an end which means it’s time for me to hit the books (or laptop) as well.

I’ve got several posts, updates and exciting things going on so I hope you’ll visit often as I share sneak peeks, before & afters, inspirations and many more.

To get the ball rolling I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite photos from our family vacation to Santa Monica. I love California so much! What summer fun did you get up to?

A quick visit to the beach as the sun sets. Lifeguard post on Santa Monica beach.
The colourful Santa Monica Pier. Closeup of the ferris wheel on the Pier.

Beach view from the top of the ferris wheel (at dusk). Beach houses. Pacific Coast Highway A bike ride along the beach. Couldn’t resist… A visit to wine country.

A game of table tennis outside Jack Spade. One of my favourite restaurants for the decor, food and view ~ Asia de Cuba in the Mondrian Hotel Los Angeles CA.

experience: le parker meridien palm springs

During our recent vacation to Palm Springs, my friend Jacqueline gave us a generous list of some of her favorite spots while visiting the area. Le Parker Meridien was on her list and although we did make it there, it was bad timing and regrettably we left sooner than I would have liked. I think ‘paparazzi’ or ‘stalker’ would have described me to a tea as I walked the grounds, snapping photos of everything I could in an effort to capture the sense of oasis and feeling of wanting to stay there.

There’s something about walking into a hotel lobby, an exciting first impression, the feeling of a getaway, girls weekend, vacation or exciting business conference. At least those are feelings I’ve had during my recent travels. Hotels are special, a home away from home, yet a fantasy world at the same time as the decor and atmosphere would not be seen in our everyday living spaces. The point exactly.

The vibe is certainly mid century, but with a groovy, hippie-like twist. The grounds are lush with greenery and winding paths revealing places to ‘hang out’ and relax along the way. All so private you forget where you are. So. Dreamy.

A lemonade stand in the grounds where you’ll find ‘adult’ lemonade and a small but tasty menu. This area is only for hotel guests, another reason to go back!

Although kid friendly, my husband and I immediately commented on how we should return to the Parker for a weekend getaway. Ummmm….how about next weekend? I hope to take it all in another time but for now I will enjoy it through the eye of my camera lens.

experience: viceroy palm springs

If you’ve ever walked into the lobby of a hotel designed by Kelly Wearstler you’ll be able to visualize exactly what I’m talking about. Colour, large scale pattern, mirrors and repetition are common in her spaces. Add in a mix of modern with period pieces and her signature style is revealed.

I’ve visited two Viceroy locations, Santa Monica and Palm Springs. They share a common vision using different colours; kelly green in Los Angeles and citron yellow in Palm Springs. We visited the aptly named Citron restaurant for a poolside lunch during our recent vacation. Kid and dog friendly, great food and people watching all while basking in the sun (or shade) are reasons we almost went back for another visit. A few of my photos to share the views.

Whether you’re a Kelly fan or simply looking for a stylish place with great food, a reservation at the Citron in Palm Springs is worth your while.

a visit to new york city

Each time I go to New York City it’s a completely different experience than the last. It’s one of the best places to return to several times because there’s just so much to see and do. I had the pleasure of visiting this past weekend, a girls getaway of sorts. Nothing on the agenda but a Sunday afternoon tour and evening dinner reservation. The rest…pure shopping, eating, more shopping and you guessed it, more eating. I decided not to bring my large camera with me and take advantage of a little less bulk by using my phone and the instagram app. Here are a few snap shots I took during above mentioned shopping and eating excursions. Enjoy!

windows at Bergdorf Goodman

Hello from New York City! I’m skipping my ‘design notes’ post today as I couldn’t resist sharing a few photos from the weekend so far. The window displays at Bergdorf Goodman are always a must see. Currently on display, a fierce and fabulous celebration of 20 years of Christian Louboutin on 5th Avenue and the year of the dragon. As you’ll see I’ve been having fun with Instagram this weekend. We’re off to the D&D Building today. Hope you have a great Monday!
