alfred sung: st. tropez collection

It’s April, so time to start thinking about spending time outdoors (if you haven’t already). If you’re dusting off your patio furniture and wondering if you need an update, let me introduce you to St. Tropez from Alfred Sung.

I first laid eyes on this new collection at the Interior Design Show in Toronto and was instantly impressed. The hit of colour, open weave pattern, fade and crack proof resin, endless configuration options and equally good for small and large outdoor spaces are all reasons why this collection is such a hit.

It’s neutral palette combines well with other neutrals and textures of course, but why not add other summery colours such as yellow, hot pink, lime green or even a print to compliment the citrus orange? So fun.

Use as an ottoman or table, the cubes are versatile pieces in check and chevron patterns. I love the attention to detail this line offers. It’s overall modern feel is flexible and easy to work with to suit your space and style.

I imagine adding over scaled planters into the scheme to complete the look. Think large resin pots filled with grasses or modern greenery.

Mix and match your way to create an outdoor oasis with the new St. Tropez collection from Alfred Sung. Available at the Bay.

new at elte: silk sari area carpets

Admittedly I wander trade shows like a kid in a candy store. Bright eyes, head on a swivel, anxious to see something new and inspiring. To be honest, it’s hard to impress us designer types. We are constantly looking for what’s new, what’s next as we see so much during our daily travels of client work and internet surfing. One booth in particular did not disappoint.

My favourite, favourite (did I mention favourite?!) item introduced at the Interior Design Show in Toronto was the Silk Orchid Collection from Elte. These area carpets blew me away.

“The secret to these rugs is the recycled sari silk that goes into them. Vintage Sari Silk dresses are collected, unravelled and then hand knotted into these exceptional, one of a kind masterpieces. The patterns are inspired by antique ikat fabrics that emphasize the transition from one magnificent colour to the next.” Jamie Metrick

Once the silk is gathered, each piece is created by hand taking roughly 4-5 months to complete, not dissimilar to other custom area carpets. The colour saturation and combinations from the saris and sheen of the silk, as you can see above, are what make these carpets truly special. An incredible 80 – 100 sari’s are used to make one 8′x10′ area carpet.

Each carpet is one of a kind and totally dependent on the saris they are able to collect. They are works of art, a classic investment and could even be considered a family heirloom. Ever have a ‘take your breath away emotional kind of feeling’ where you’ll miss out if you don’t take it home today. Yes, that. Which is precisely why I have one on hold for myself :)

new from merida meridian

I love getting packages in the mail and I have to admit I get a little giddy when they’re samples. There is nothing like the touch and feel of something new and exciting in the world of design whether fabrics, area carpets or even wood finishes. I know, I know, it’s somewhat nerdy but that’s why I love what I do.

Last week there was a box on my doorstep with new samples from Merida Meridian and I was very excited about what I saw inside. Soft, plush carpets available in a rainbow of colours and 12 pattern options. If you’re a designer reading this you can relate to the thrill of customization and options, right?!

Merida Meridian is known for their natural fiber carpets committed to design and sustainability. Merida’s Sweater Collection has been brought to new heights with the ability to put your handprint on the design. Renderings and strike offs are available so design away!

I recently shared sneak peeks of a mountain retreat I am working on and one item left on my to-do list is area carpets. I think these just might be the ticket.

Using a combination of crimped, felted and twisted wools, the detail of the weave and loops are wonderful. Available as area rugs or for wall-to-wall installations. The thickness of the carpet is ideal, not to thick that it won’t fit under a door swing, yet plush enough to feel cozy underfoot. I wish you could pop right into the screen and feel for yourself!

Available at Layers and Layers in Vancouver.

telio fall 2012 fabric collection

Last week I attended a showing of the Telio Fall 2012 fabric collection at DWA Interior Furnishings. Wowie! Lots of lovely eye candy in every kind of texture, pattern and style imaginable. Telio is a large fabric house representing several lines. You’ll find an array of modern to traditional, from countries like Spain, France and beyond, in silks, linens, velvets and sheer metallics, not to mention price points to suit almost every comfort level. Here is a peak at some of my favourites.

SAHCO – Naturals Collection

RUBELLI – vintage velvets with a heathered look and oh so soft to the touch.

NOBILIS – fresh colour with a linear embroidered detail on linen from the Swing & Smart collection.

JIM THOMPSON – large scale pattern with a bold and fun mix of colour (top) and co-ordinating embroidered dotted stripe (shown with floral, bottom).

PEPE PENALVER – modern global feel with muted colours, textures and patterns from the Out of Africa collection.

SONIA RYKIEL – bold colour combinations and graphic patterns oozes confidence and creates a statement in any room.

I loved this quote from Julien Hakoun during the presentation:

“The most important thing to me, are the feelings, the sensation you get from the fabric.”

Fabrics are not only about covering, draping or serving a purpose. They evoke emotion and can be a captivating element in the space if carefully chosen. Telio manages to accomplish all of these details with this fall’s collection. Simply gorgeous.

See something you like? Let me know, or designers please contact your local Telio representative to see these fabulous fabrics first hand.

circa lighting introduces ralph lauren

Lighting is an incredibly important feature in every room from a function perspective but why not make it look fabulous while you’re at it? Nothing says timeless more than Ralph Lauren, and Circa Lighting has recently collaborated with the classic fashion house to create a fantastic new line of lighting. Celebrating time-honored tradition and modern sophistication, the lamps could settle into any room quite nicely. Choose from Ralph Lauren Home or Lauren by Ralph Lauren, and similar to his clothing collections there is something for almost every taste and budget. I’m leaning towards Dustin and Delphene as my favorites. Both completely different but I love them just the same.

1. Dustin dodecahedron table lamp 2. Delphene blue stripe table lamp 3. Round leather wrapped table lamp 4. Camille pierced porcelain table lamp with inner night light 5. Erie marble table lamp 6. Heaton porcelain table lamp **many more on the Circa Lighting site!

So tell me, do you have a favorite?

decor trends 2010: turquoise

It’s this colour…you’ve seen it before…you know, the Pantone colour of the year!

It’s been a few months now since the announcement, but in case you missed it, here it is:

blueswatch

I have to admit, I love this colour (and shades of it). This photo of Columbus Isle makes my heart go pitter patter. The view is beautiful and the colours of the ocean spectacular. Take me there!

the-bay

I’ve used it in small doses as you will see below, however if you are more inclined to dive in and add some ‘WOW’, here are some ideas:

Painted wall panelling. You don’t have to paint it the same ‘white’ as your trims. Adding a colourful wall will add life to an otherwise neutral room. (House and Home)

Wallpaper… (Courant.com)

Soft, {yet bright} wall colour with shades of turquoise bedding. (Elle Decor)

bluebed

And if you’d rather not commit to colour on your walls, there’s always the floor. (House and Home)

bluerug

The funny thing is, I’ve had turquoise in my decor for several years now. I purchased these paintings at the Alberta College of Art and Design Student Show & Sale. They are one of my favorite pieces in my home ~ an abstract representation of ‘Jacks’, a game I played by the hour when I was young, sitting on the floor of my Grandma’s kitchen while she cooked or baked.

A multi coloured cloth covers the table with a turquoise medalion anchoring the centre and last year I reupholstered the end chairs at my dining table in a soft floral with turquoise accents.

So what do *YOU* think of the 2010 colour of the year? I’m curious to know…
