the teen gift guide 2014

I think I’m having the most fun shopping for our teenager, oddly enough. I dare say it’s getting to the point of needing to curb my spending. Now don’t get me wrong, she’s very particular and there’s a small amount of angst as I “hope she likes it!” each time I make a purchase. In my own teenage years, I remember placing my requested items on hold at each store so my mom could pick up with ease and of course not make a mistake in the selection process. Egads!

This list contains everything from the ultimate concert tickets to Taylor Swift’s 1989 world tour happening at a venue near you throughout 2015, all the way to a fabulously creative journal. I hope this gift guide provides some insight if you have a wonderfully moody and ever so particular teenager on you’re hands. May the odds be ever in your favour…

the mens gift guide 2014

I find guys amongst the toughest to buy for. Maybe because mine is, I put every other guy in the same category. Feel my pain? I asked my husband (who I will say is quite stylish) to provide shopping direction towards cool finds for guys and what’s topping the list. For your shopping convenience, he also made sure each item was available locally (for you Calgarians). Good luck!

lately loving: 3-dimensional tile

Today kicks off another kitchen renovation for the team at Nyla Free Designs Inc. We are thrilled to be working with a long term client of ours again, especially in this key area of the home. Design decisions in other areas have been thoughtfully considered with an underlying artful approach. The kitchen is no exception where we have selected an artisanal, hand made, 3-dimensional tile for a feature wall behind the range. I can hardly wait to share more!

The sight line from the living and dining room is key in creating a visual cohesion throughout the main floor and with the range wall part of this view you can bet we’re paying close attention to the detail, texture and finish of the backsplash. I am thrilled with our showstopping selection! Of course we’ll keep you updated along the way, however in the meantime here are some 3-dimension tiles to inspire.

good friday link love: moose on the loose

Yes, it’s Thursday, however I’m posting my link love a day early as we’re taking the day off for Good Friday.

Things have been tight quarters around the office these days. We’re gearing up for a large installation happening in May and many deliveries are crossing the threshold of our tiny office space which means boxes are piling up and it’s looking like a shipping and receiving depot. As we open boxes it’s a little like Christmas as we squeal with the arrival of cool accessories and products all set to pull a lakeside cottage together in time for the first long weekend of the “summer”.

We couldn’t help but have some fun as we unwrapped our moose friend….

lately loving: elho outdoor planters

Elho believes an enjoyable home is important for everyone. They specialize in design savvy plastic planters with a modern approach and colourful selection. Based in the Netherlands with a global appeal, these planters come in a vast array of shapes and sizes, suitable for indoors and out. One might not expect to find the likes of these planters at a big box retailer such as Canadian Tire, however because my husband has an outside the “big box” way of thinking, his location in Calgary, on Macleod Trail South, is pushing the envelope of what you would normally expect to see in their aisles. They have many in stock, ready to take home and transform your yard, however special orders are also available. Because these planters weather all four seasons, you can get creative with everything from summer gardening right through to outdoor planters for the holidays. Here’s just a small sample of the look of elho.

IDS 14: ikea kitchen and dressing room

Crushing the ‘IKEA’ stereotype by creating a space that leaves you doing a double take at the large IKEA letters on the side of the wall, this is one of the most anticipated booths at IDS.

While discussion was had about the number of non-IKEA items used to create the booth, what wasn’t to be overlooked was the clear sense of what you can do with a room using IKEA furniture and fixtures. The point is, while saving on budget friendly fixtures such as closet storage, splurging on a carved wooden daybed and gold guilt mirror are less paralyzing to the pocket book and are what take the room to a whole new level. The kind of level that makes you think, WOW!

Here’s what happens when the creative juices flow and there’s an ‘outside the box’ approach to design…

ids14: mettro source tile

While ‘patterned tile’ has been around for centuries, these artistic tiles are making their way back into modern day homes. It’s one of my favourite additions to kitchens and bathrooms right now. I can’t get enough of it! The Mettro Source booth was an inspiration of tile from top to bottom, from pattern and texture to colour combinations. Hard to choose just one favourite out of the bunch. Last year I was also inspired by their booth which resulted in selecting a fabulous tile for a kids bathroom in a mountain home. My clients are just moving in so I hope to share it with you soon. Stay tuned!

breakfast television calgary: 2014 trends

I have to say, I’m quite excited about the 2014 trends. We love to know what’s new and next, don’t we? However, often times a “trendy” item might leaving you feeling it will be a “been there, done that” moment in the not too distant future. I feel investing in any one of these trends will provide you with a classic look with some staying power that won’t go out of style tomorrow.

Here is the style forecast for 2014 and my segment on BT Calgary on the trends for this year.

inspiration: piet boon styling

It’s been a while since I’ve purchased a design book, but when a client of mine introduced me to Piet Boon I knew this book was a must in my library. The look and feel is beautiful not only on the inside, but the attention to detail on the outside is also what had me swooning.

Piet Boon is a Dutch designer and firm of the same name focused on the design and detail for exteriors, interiors and product. Karin Meyn, creative director for over 25 years, brings her passion for art, fabrics and materials to the relaxed and stylish allure of the brand. Together they have created an inspirational and practical book revealing the secrets behind Piet Boon’s style and design.

There is an endless supply of inspiration within these pages and each time I flip through I am captivated by something new. If you have a creative on your list to buy for, Piet Boon STYLING would be a welcome addition to their library too.
