lately loving: fashion sketches

I am fascinated by illustration but admittedly it was not my forté in design school. I was much more technical, excelling at drafting and details as opposed to the lose, freehand sketches.

A relaxed rendering of a space offers a visual like no other.

The fashion industry has a similar approach to convey ideas, inspirations and concepts. A loosely drawn figure in model poise comes alive on paper with a handful of lines and touches of colour. Fashion funnels the world of interiors with inspiration in the sense of colour, pattern, lines and details. It’s fascinating the connection, to the point where we see fashion to interior blog posts, clothing designers creating home lines and each colour of the year dually noted in both, on runways and in trade shows alike.

This artistry may be an unexpected addition to wall decor however offers impact in an organic way and a peek into the beginning stages of the world of fashion.

fashion to interiors: hot pink, charcoal and black

There’s still snow on the ground here, but the fact that Spring has officially arrived makes me sooooo happy.

I snapped this photo at the Bay downtown Toronto in January pining for spring during the bitter cold spell. It’s such a struggle to see new fashion hit the shops when the weather is anything but conducive to sleeveless tops and bare legs. Not to mention wearing hot pink makes you feel like a beacon against the white snow. Luckily bringing this colour scheme into your interior is much easier with no seasonal constraints. Here’s a spring inspired fashion to interiors to enjoy on this first day of Spring. I love this space!

project sneak peek: home office design

We’re quite excited about a home office design we recently presented to a client. A home office suitable for husband, wife and potential homework area for kids with a modern combination of warm and cool, texture and sleek lines, pattern and colour. Drawing inspiration from a bedroom image, we gathered finishes and materials around this palette. The jolt of acid yellow, back painted in the bookshelves provides a high interest within the otherwise neutral colour scheme. Mix in a school house light fixture and mid-century seating and we’ve created a classically modern space to stand the test of time.   home office idea board Office Samples If working from home is part of your day, why not create a space that’s inspiring and functional?

lately loving: good luck charms

St. Patrick’s Day brings along the luck of the Irish, however there are many other symbols of good fortune, some of which you may consider adding to your decor. We’ve just purchased the (massive) good luck neon horse shoe sign (below), by artist Todd Sanders of Roadhouse Relics  for a clients “funky spa”. I found it via Modenus and instantly knew it would be the perfect addition to the space. It will be joining other quirky elements to create a fun and inspiring place to relax and workout. I’m excited to pull it all together….wish me luck!

More lucky accessories….

bt calgary: decorating with metals

Metals are everywhere in our home and much like the jewelry we wear there are statement pieces with huge impact to smaller items adding subtle, yet important details. Early this morning I was on BT Calgary sharing tips on decorating with metals. Watch the video for all the details.

5. Metals in the kitchen using metals in the kitchen, house and home magazine Take a look around and see how many metals you have in your home currently, even within one room. Any areas you could use a little more depth or sparkle?

before & after: modern elegant dining room

Looking back on the before photo even I can’t believe the transformation of this dining room. Our client was incredibly open to stepping outside the box of basic and adding elements of interest and individuality while maintaining an elegant approach to modernizing their dining room.

The BEFORE: Dining Room Before
The first order of business was to lighten the room. We used Pratt & Lambert Feather Grey on the walls while the trims remained the same. We approached the ceiling with something a little more unexpected and dramatic… wallpaper! New drapery, wall sconces, chairs, lighting, area carpet and artwork all carefully selected to create a sophisticated and comfortable feel for entertaining guests. We were considerate of the existing dining table, sideboard and table lamps when choosing the new items to maintain a cohesive feel and understated elegance.

behind the scenes: lesley anton

If you don’t know Lesley Anton then allow me to introduce you. Lesley is a ceramic artist and designer who’s lighting designs are among my favourites. With an organic undertone, Lesley draws inspiration from nature in both texture and colour, and with each lamp handmade there are no two exactly the same. While the lamps are strong in scale and design, they provide a subtle simplicity to any room.

I had the pleasure of visiting Lesley’s studio during a trip to Los Angeles after already purchasing two pairs of lamps and loved the opportunity to see the creative vision and roots of where it all happens. Here’s a peek inside. Her full catalog can be found online and her lighting and ceramics are available through the following locations.

Living Room, Nyla Free Designs, Foothills Renovations, Lori Andrews Photography I like to think of lighting as jewels in a room, whether hanging, table or floor. Being considerate of not only function but visual impact when selecting lighting provides a space with interest adding another layer of texture and an illuminating decorative touch.

lately loving: butterflies

We’re noticing butterflies poping up everywhere from art forms to wallpaper these days. With upwards of 15,000 different species they’re as unique and individual as the creative ways they’re being used in the world of design. I love the three dimensional approach as shown in the art work below, a massive wall decal filling a wall, pixelated wallpaper or one where the butterflies feel like they will fly off the wall. We’re loving the sophisticated approach to butterflies fluttering around these days. What do you think?

friday link love: california dreamin’

I just love California, can you tell? Walking out of the Parker Hotel I captured this image I thought was so indicative of the California vibe…palm trees, sunshine and a great car :)

It’s going to be -500 degrees here this weekend so I’ll be hibernating. Hope you have a lovely weekend planned.

modernism week: double decker bus tour

While Modernism Week was filled with fabulous tours and events, the double decker bus tour was a highlight of our trip. Sitting on the top deck in the open air taking in all the sites was most enjoyable. Add in the education and concepts of the architecture and you’ve got a match made in heaven. Our tour guide was witty, informative and kept us completely engaged with plenty of humor and insights into the lives of those who helped give Palm Springs it’s vibe. I highly recommend a tour if you’re in Palm Springs for Modernism Week.

A comment from our guide resonated with me…

“Homes are not good because of the era they were built. Going through a thoughtful design process, inside and out, will yield a well built home no matter the year.”

I find myself wondering when the approach to architecture and design became a little less thoughtful. The so called “strip malls” that line our streets have no appreciation to design or architecture. Is that too harsh? During the 50′s and 60′s in Palm Springs, even gas stations hired architects to design their buildings and noticeably stand out as forms of architecture to be admired. I wish the same were true today.
