summer solstice weekend

Summer solstice has become one of my favourite days of the year. It means summer is officially here and we enjoy the day with the most amount of daylight. Last year we hosted a party to celebrate milestone birthdays as well as this special day with family and friends.

Part of the fun of hosting parties is creating the ambiance. The music, flowers, candles, food, beverages and decor elements all add creative touches to any party. Of course the main ingredient is always the people.

We’re planning to do the same this year so today I’m working on all those decorative details in preparation. As we’ve just come off of a difficult week personally, I’m so looking forward to having this time with special friends.

Last year we were lucky enough to have my sister in law (and photographer!), Blynda DaCosta here for the party and she took a few photos before and during the party. Here’s a little “taste”.

lately loving: swing arm wall sconces

One of my favourite decor items right now is the swing arm wall sconce. We have used them in a few of our projects lately. Versatile, functional and of course stylish, this decorative element fits into any room from modern to traditional.  Most mount to the wall without the need of an electrical box, all you need is an outlet! . Which one is your favourite?

before & after: living room makeover

A great client of ours asked if we could makeover her living room for a special birthday. How could we possibly say no? We got down to business and ordered the upholstery items right off the hop. With the key pieces selected and taking inspiration from their adjacent dining room we pulled together the remaining details from an “in stock” approach. living room before

The space before felt disconnected from the rest of the main floor and as it is a natural sight line when you walk in the front door an update was definitely in order. The living room was ready for a transformation and update and we were ready for the challenge! living room materials the After: livingroom2 living room makeover living room makeover

behind the scenes: photo gallery wall

One of the biggest challenges from our recent Sylvan Lake cottage installation was filling wall space. In the TV room we addressed the walls in a few different ways, one being a gallery of photo frames. We arrived with plenty of options (more than we needed) so we had room to play and decide which ones worked best. We laid them out on the floor first to get an idea of the layout. With the help of a professional installer the gallery wall took shape and once the locations were set, it was easy to fill the frames and hang back on the wall.

Here are a few more tips to consider if you’re thinking of a gallery wall in your home:

1. Mix frame choices. Giving the wall character with complimenting frames from simple to detailed adds depth and interest.

2. Shake up the sizes. No need for all frames to be the same. A mix of sizes offers an eclectic and casual feel to a family space.

3. Room to grow. Leave space for the many memories yet to come.

4. Change it up. Choose frames you can easily access to switch around photos as the years go by.

5. Embrace imperfection. An organic approach to the installation means there’s no need to align every frame. Offset frames keeps the wall interesting and fun.

lately loving: sunshine yellow

With the days long and the sun high I am gravitating towards all things yellow. The saturated warmth is putting a smile on my face and a kick in my step as summer is by far my favourite season. Yellow is the perfect accent to summer, inside and out, fashion or interiors… this is my latest obsession.

a day in the life: what we’ve been up to

We’re back! As you’ve noticed we’ve been MIA lately because there’s been a lot of action around the office as of late. I find as we get busy, the first thing to suffer is our social media and blog presence. Being busy is certainly a good thing but we’re missing being here and hope you have too.  A day in the life should read “a month in the life” so we’ve got a few insights and small sampling of what we’ve been up to over the past several weeks. More to come with respect to all, however this should whet your whistle in the mean time.

stikwoodinstall We installed a cottage top to bottom in Sylvan Lake. Here, the stikwood is being installed over a desk area just off the kitchen.

As you can see, it’s been a whirlwind of installations, photo shoots and finishing touches over the last month, not to mention the exciting new projects we have on the go. Hope you’ll stay tuned.

friday link love: firsts

This weekend we’re preparing for our youngest daughters first dance competition. While dancing is nothing new to her, the competition part is. To me too! We make a great team however, as she is patient and able to sit still, and I have found a new skill in the hair and make up category.

photo This week she had a family in-line skating night at the school. I went along to watch while others joined in the fun, one of which was a little boy’s grandmother. It was her first time on skates and she had the biggest smile on her face. She fell a few times but laughed and got back up. Holding the hand of her daughter-in-law she shuffled around the gym floor to the music relishing in her accomplishment.  I had a smile on my face the entire time I watched her. How great for her to embrace this new activity.

It’s easy to experience things for the first time where you’re young and let’s face it, the level of appreciation is not always there. When was the last time you tried something new and put yourself in a vulnerable position? My link love this week is a must see video of a first ever flight for two senior ladies. It will have you laughing, crying and will re-affirm that you’re never too old to try something new.

Happy weekend!

a day in the life: 48 hours in Vancouver

I’m off to Vancouver today for a whirlwind 48 hours. I have lots planned including a photo shoot at a Vancouver condo I installed last year. Really excited to be working with Tracey Ayton and styling the place up pretty for the photos. I’ll also be stopping into the Layers and Layers showroom and visiting a new project I’m starting in West Vancouver. It’s going to be exciting! Here are a few detail shots I took of the condo to give you a sneak peek. As always…stay tuned for more!

project sneak peek: modern youthful bathroom

Once in a while a project comes along where the request is to transform a room into something it’s not. It could be as simple as making a dining room into a home office, a bedroom into a dressing room or in this case a closet into a bathroom.

On a third floor, with angled ceilings and space at a premium, we set out to design a space once filled with clothes into a three piece bathroom. Literally every inch counted, from heights to widths and distances between.

Although a kids bathroom, our approach to this small, yet functional space was modern, bold and fresh with a splash of the unexpected… a youthful feel with staying power.

bathroom concept Stay tuned for the after photos and more about how we turned this closet into an ensuite bathroom.

lately loving: mint

Hello Monday! Hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend. Ever have those days where you think, Yay! it’s only Friday and we still have Saturday AND Sunday…so much weekend still left. Fast forward to Sunday evening and it’s back to “where did the time go?”, “it can’t possibly be Monday again already!” Yet, here we are.

Thankfully I’m stocked with chocolate which will provide some fuel. The next few weeks are going to be exciting!

The colour mint is everywhere these days. It’s not a typical colour used in interiors especially in a large scale. I love the soft and subtle wall colour in an otherwise neutral room (top) as well as a splash of colour in the kitchen cabinetry (bottom). How about the dramatic window and door trim in mint? Do you dare? Or are smaller accessories more your style?
