design notes: 2.13.12

We don’t get too carried away with Valentines Day but it is a good excuse to score some chocolate, no? Instead of red and pink I thought I’d dive into the ice cream colours today for my notes.

Let’s kick it off with a little fashion love. How about this dress? It’s the colour I love the most. A muted terracotta, warm walnut, cherry wood kind of flavour, much like the sideboard and chairs in the interior below. So pretty.

But really, let’s talk about this room. Recently featured on desire to inspire, you will see the rest of this fabulous space here.

• it offers a subtle richness and soothing colour palette, much like ice cream!

• who can pass up a chevron area carpet ~ love!

• love the two tone mocha/ivory wall colours, a traditional approach to a modern space

• would love to see more homes with architectural details like coved ceilings.

This week is going to be sweet! Hope it’s off to a great start. Happy Monday!

friday fashion files

While in New York City last weekend we saw a lot of colour blocked styling going on in fashion. I took some shots while in Saks and wanted to share. Love this colour combination but honestly can’t see pulling it off in it’s entirety. Ended up purchasing bright coral pencil pants, paired with a taupe sweater, nude shoes and a statement necklace. Much safer I guess but I did step out and purchase coloured pants after all.

I suppose if you live in a warmer climate it’s easier to pull off, but combining all of these colours into one outfit is somewhat jarring in our very brown climate right now. Bring on the sun and warm weather I say! What do you think of this trend?

Have a stylish weekend!

a visit to new york city

Each time I go to New York City it’s a completely different experience than the last. It’s one of the best places to return to several times because there’s just so much to see and do. I had the pleasure of visiting this past weekend, a girls getaway of sorts. Nothing on the agenda but a Sunday afternoon tour and evening dinner reservation. The rest…pure shopping, eating, more shopping and you guessed it, more eating. I decided not to bring my large camera with me and take advantage of a little less bulk by using my phone and the instagram app. Here are a few snap shots I took during above mentioned shopping and eating excursions. Enjoy!

windows at Bergdorf Goodman

Hello from New York City! I’m skipping my ‘design notes’ post today as I couldn’t resist sharing a few photos from the weekend so far. The window displays at Bergdorf Goodman are always a must see. Currently on display, a fierce and fabulous celebration of 20 years of Christian Louboutin on 5th Avenue and the year of the dragon. As you’ll see I’ve been having fun with Instagram this weekend. We’re off to the D&D Building today. Hope you have a great Monday!

friday fashion files

Happy Friday! I’m traveling to New York today (literally finishing this post on the plane with wi-fi. Crazy!) hoping I’ve packed enough stylishly comfortable outfits. I have however left room in my suitcase AND brought along another bag…just in case :) Last weekend I brought nothing but heels to Toronto. Big mistake. This weekend, all flats. I’m ready for some serious shopping!

I’m loving the combo of the outfit below. The top with the bold navy/green stripe is definitely speaking to me and I love that bag. I think this would make a pretty great interior colour scheme too.

What are you up to this weekend? Hope it’s a good one!

sneak peek: family room makeover

Happy Thursday!

I’m patiently waiting for installation day on a project. The area carpet is taking longer than expected so we’re on hold until further notice. My client would like a one day transformation…and so we wait, but that’s ok, good thinks come to those who wait, right? In the meantime I’m on the hunt for accent pillows for the sofas (see large question mark below). I blogged recently about pillows and how they’re part of the styling stage, meaning one of the last details to be selected in a project. I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled in hopes of finding the perfect, family friendly, yet sophisticated, not too formal, hint of colour kind of pillows. Here’s a peek at a few fabric selections and items we have on order.

1. Kaleigh Ceramic Lamp: Arteriors 2. Carved Chest: Hickory Chair 3. Area carpet: Weavers Art

We have bold pattern in drapery as well as a chair and ottoman working alongside teal velvet sofas. Contrasting this with muted colours, textures and a dose of colour…loving the yellow! It’s my goal to find one pillow and purchase four to add cohesive, not overly fussed accents to the sofa.

Tomorrow I’m headed east again but this time to New York for a shopping weekend. So excited! I’m on a mission to find pillows among many other items. Surely I’ll find something, don’t you think?!

new at elte: silk sari area carpets

Admittedly I wander trade shows like a kid in a candy store. Bright eyes, head on a swivel, anxious to see something new and inspiring. To be honest, it’s hard to impress us designer types. We are constantly looking for what’s new, what’s next as we see so much during our daily travels of client work and internet surfing. One booth in particular did not disappoint.

My favourite, favourite (did I mention favourite?!) item introduced at the Interior Design Show in Toronto was the Silk Orchid Collection from Elte. These area carpets blew me away.

“The secret to these rugs is the recycled sari silk that goes into them. Vintage Sari Silk dresses are collected, unravelled and then hand knotted into these exceptional, one of a kind masterpieces. The patterns are inspired by antique ikat fabrics that emphasize the transition from one magnificent colour to the next.” Jamie Metrick

Once the silk is gathered, each piece is created by hand taking roughly 4-5 months to complete, not dissimilar to other custom area carpets. The colour saturation and combinations from the saris and sheen of the silk, as you can see above, are what make these carpets truly special. An incredible 80 – 100 sari’s are used to make one 8′x10′ area carpet.

Each carpet is one of a kind and totally dependent on the saris they are able to collect. They are works of art, a classic investment and could even be considered a family heirloom. Ever have a ‘take your breath away emotional kind of feeling’ where you’ll miss out if you don’t take it home today. Yes, that. Which is precisely why I have one on hold for myself :)

dabble issue 6 is live!

Are you feeling like it’s been a while since we’ve seen a new dabble issue? Me too! Three months is a long time but well worth it. Issue #6 is live so pop on over to dabble and check out the anniversary issue with a new look. Can you believe it’s been a year already?!

This issue, Reality Check is all about kids bedrooms. Here’s my little peanut, Lori Andrews style :)

new from merida meridian

I love getting packages in the mail and I have to admit I get a little giddy when they’re samples. There is nothing like the touch and feel of something new and exciting in the world of design whether fabrics, area carpets or even wood finishes. I know, I know, it’s somewhat nerdy but that’s why I love what I do.

Last week there was a box on my doorstep with new samples from Merida Meridian and I was very excited about what I saw inside. Soft, plush carpets available in a rainbow of colours and 12 pattern options. If you’re a designer reading this you can relate to the thrill of customization and options, right?!

Merida Meridian is known for their natural fiber carpets committed to design and sustainability. Merida’s Sweater Collection has been brought to new heights with the ability to put your handprint on the design. Renderings and strike offs are available so design away!

I recently shared sneak peeks of a mountain retreat I am working on and one item left on my to-do list is area carpets. I think these just might be the ticket.

Using a combination of crimped, felted and twisted wools, the detail of the weave and loops are wonderful. Available as area rugs or for wall-to-wall installations. The thickness of the carpet is ideal, not to thick that it won’t fit under a door swing, yet plush enough to feel cozy underfoot. I wish you could pop right into the screen and feel for yourself!

Available at Layers and Layers in Vancouver.
