dabble issue 8 is live!

Well look who we have here on the cover of Dabble Issue 8! Meet Duddlys Champion. He is the puppy of my ‘much taller than me’ little bro Terik and sister-in-law Blynda.

Now I must brag about Blynda for a minute. I know she’s family and all but really, she’s pretty fabulous. First of all, I believe it takes a special person to be a wedding photographer. A highly intense, (possibly stressful) day and yet one of the most treasured moments to be documented in a lifetime, all riding on the shoulders of the photographer. Ha! No pressure! But seriously, Blynda captures the emotion, detail and love of this special day. Her photography has been seen in Style Me Pretty, Wedding Obsession and Wedding Bells, as well as being voted one of Toronto’s Top Portrait Photographers. Whether, weddings, maternity, newborn babies or families she approaches everything with style and grace. Blynda is creative, passionate, ever so talented and beautiful to boot. If you’re in the GTA…call her! That’s all I’m gonna say. Take a peek at her sites, blyndadacostaweddings.com or bdphotoblog.com and see for yourself.

This British bulldog is Mr. personality and becoming quite the super star, with regular appearances on Blynda’s blog and marketing material here and there. Adorned in uber cute accessories and always looking less than impressed, Duddly poses in front of the camera like a natural born model. He’s one to watch. I’m sure of it.

So what are you waiting for? Pop on over to check out the latest issue of Dabble. Duddly says so!

colour inspirations: lemon lime

Ahhhhhh sunshine. It’s a beautiful thing and does the body and soul a world of good. Make it California sun and now you’re talking! One of my favourite trips to California had me galavanting around the residential areas of Los Angeles on the Dwell on Design home tour. (as a side note, if you have a chance to go on this tour, you must!)

One house in particular, (see more here) had lemon trees filling the pathway to the front door. How fabulous to have this beautiful fruit, both in shape, colour and taste gracing your outdoor space. For this colour inspiration concept I’ve gone outside, creating a vignette of an outdoor dining space using lemon lime citrus colours with a splash of blue sky. So go on, get outside and spruce up your space with a shot of colour.

guest post: designer challenge

Hello Friday! Today I’m guest posting over on Shauna Oberg’s blog, Satori Design for Living. Shauna has a fun way of bringing designers together with a little challenge of sorts and I’m thrilled to be included on today’s post. This is part two of the ‘which mirror would you choose?’ challenge.

We were given three mirror options (shown below) to choose from and then asked to use our creative license to design a space around it. So pop on over to the Designer Challenge: Which Mirror? {part 2} to see what I came up with.

Which one do you think I chose?

Thanks so much for having me Shauna!

ps. (see part one of Designer Challenge: Which Mirror? here)

a day in the life: shopping with mom and trina turk

My girls have grown up shopping with me. It’s a huge part of my job. I started my business when my oldest daughter was four months old (now almost 11) so I’ve carted them around here and there, to and fro, especially during their pre school days. While very good, they’re also getting creative in how they pass the time as we go from store to store. During our vacation in Palm Springs (and of course shopping) our five year old had the camera while ten year old modeled. I was busy admiring all the pretty and colourful bits in Trina Turk and my girls were doing a fashion photo shoot.

It’s nice not to be the one behind the camera all the time. Sure, the photos aren’t perfect, but they capture the moment and fun they were having. I hear them giggling with each other as I look at the photos. What a great little memory.

I feel very fortunate to be in a position to work for myself, allowing time to spend with my girls before and after school as well as activities but it means they’re with me for work errands quite often. It’s certainly has it’s challenges and sacrifices but also huge benefits. We have a lot of fun shopping together (for the most part!) and I notice the girls playing “designer” with each other from time to time. Warms a mama’s heart.

Just another day shopping with Mom….

design tips: table setting ideas

If you stopped by earlier this week and read about my visit to the Cooking Room in Red Deer then you may have been expecting this post. I shared a few ideas for setting an outdoor table during the class and promised the group I’d do a post showing more. I used only the items I had at the class and worked a little mix and match magic, all with melamine/outdoor worthy products from Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Canadian Tire, the Bay and Superstore. I infused a little southwestern flavour into the colours and patterns to keep with the menu of the class but these ideas can be applied to any style or season for that matter. There really are so many options to play around with so the moral of this story is to have fun and embrace hosting a backyard BBQ or dinner party setting a casual table without compromising style.

project sneak peek: old fashioned with a twist

As a designer I often find myself overflowing with creativity. I have been blessed with wonderful clients and exciting projects over the years and this one is no exception. This project is pushing me to use that extra dose of creativity and I’m loving it. We’ve been working with existing antiques and a certain nostalgia to bring this little girls room to life in an old fashioned way, but with a twist of modern. I realized I’m missing the drapery fabric in this collage so you’ll have to wait for the room reveal to see it. Until then, here’s a sneak peek at the story so far.

a day in the life: sharing ideas on outdoor decorating

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of sharing outdoor decorating ideas at the Cooking Room in Red Deer, Alberta, a cooking school where students are treated to educational culinary classes from September to May with themes ranging from Thai to Indian. For this class the menu was a southwestern fusion, a perfect fit for a summertime party.

I was first asked to participate in a class over the holidays sharing quick and easy decorating tips for entertaining. It was such a hit, a second class transpired for the summer. Here are a few photos from the evening showing the fabulous classroom space as well as a peek at the loot I took with me. Stay tuned for Thursday’s post where I’ve got 10 snapshots of place setting ideas, some of which I shared at the class.

friday fashion file: island style

I’m off to a tropical island today! Can’t wait to warm up after all the rain we’ve been having in Calgary. I’ll be on assignment for Dabble to bring you the best in design, travel and food for an upcoming issue. I thought I’d bring a little ocean breeze to the blog with teals and turquoise today as we head into the weekend.

Enjoy!

before & after: family room makeover

Besides the kitchen, family rooms are the hub of the home and I believe a space where good design and functionality are able to live in a successful marriage of beautiful, family friendly furniture and fabrics. This room was feeling tired and ready for change. My client wanted a fresh feel all while using the existing teal velvet sofa and loveseat as well as the wall colour. I put together a palette of fabrics (see the family room sneak peek), using a mix of patterns and colour to liven up the room.

Family room before. The dog really liked the area carpet as you can see by the corner. Time for a new one! We originally intended to use the existing wood frame curved chairs but opted for new ones to achieve the right scale for the space.

Family room after. Fret work style drapery fabric from Schmacher in ivory and grey offers a much higher impact than the previous neutral solid pleats. New chairs in a classic style, upholstered in a modern speckled Designers Guild ultrasuede, ideal for easy maintenance.

New area carpet from Weavers Art, a gorgeous fresco pattern in muted colours of yellow, ivory, taupe and grey.

New art work by David Burdeny from Herringer Kiss Gallery adds a calming feel to the room, a perfect addition to this busy house but also holds sentimental value as the family has fond memories at this particular beach.

Details make a difference, especially on a coffee table. Close up shots of the table vignette and the punch of yellow is a perfect hit in small doses both here and in the Arteriors table lamp (shown above).

I love the soft mix of colour and pattern. It’s a stylish, comfortable and welcoming environment suited to lounging in front of the television, reading a book or gathering with friends.

Up next is a master bedroom re-vamp. We’ve just started ordering furniture so stay tuned for more!

colour inspirations: gucci

I couldn’t help but be drawn to this vignette in Gucci on 5th Avenue in New York City. It has the allure of travel and far away places. Tailored and textured, simple and classic, I imagined what a room might look like built around this image. Inspiration is everywhere. Whether in fashion, nature, vacations, I could go on. If it impacts you in that moment, chances are it will do the same in a room scheme. Listen to the ooohs and ahhhhs within to provide ideas for your home.

I took the bottom photo at ABC Carpet & Home. It’s a textured wall with incredible depth and colour. Doesn’t it work well with the Gucci image above? I love them together and in fact, I think the ‘wall’ image would make an amazing area carpet to work with the scheme of furniture. Hello?! Can you stay stunning? It would cost a pretty penny but I’m positive it would make the room famous. Just a suggestion should you wish to take these ideas and make them your own.

1. Baladi Rustic Mirror from The Cross 2. Anjeo Distressed Gold Mercury Glass table lamp from Arteriors 3. Harrison two drawer file cabinet by Alexa Hampton for Hickory Chair  4. Vaughn leather chair in Brighton Col. Giacomo from Crate and Barrel 5. Missoni Masuleah cushion from Provide Home 6. Auburn small stool, design by Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair.

Oh…and if the adorable Gucci skirt is a little out of budget, I found a similar one at Jacob for a fraction of the cost. Definitely the look for less :)
