design notes: 4.16.12

On Friday I heard some pretty great news via AphroChic. Domino is back with a special edition of best makeovers, decorating tips and an insiders source guide. (Even us insiders love the source guides!) I can not wait to get my hands on a copy.

I admit my print magazine consumption has gone down. With blogs, online magazines and quite frankly not enough time in the day (sadly) to sit down and read through them all. IF however, Domino was still in print I’m pretty sure it would continue to grace the inside of my mailbox each month.

I’m on the hunt for this issue. If you see it around Calgary let me know! I haven’t seen it anywhere yet.

I also discovered a photo stream of Domino images on flickr that Cassandra from Coco & Kelly put together. I was so delighted to find this and honestly came across so many images I love and didn’t even realize were from Domino. There are far too many loves I couldn’t single out just one as my absolute favorite but this particular room is high on the list for sure.
• for me this is white done right. It’s warm and soft, not cold and stark.

• there is a feminine feel to the room but the clean lines and simplicity says a guy could hang out here too.

• love the combination of creams, white, soft pinks and caramel.

• the volume of this room is stunning, not to mention the Victorian details in the architecture on the ceiling and fireplace.

On a side note: I am madly in love with peonies right now. I bought two stems for a recent photo shoot and wish I’d bought an entire mound of them, and this weekend we purchased a (now empty!) tub of sweet and salty caramel ice cream that was to die for! Two images that felt right at home in the above room :)

Now, if only Metropolitan Home would resurface with a special edition…. who’s with me here?

let’s learn: buying original art segment on BT Calgary

I had a great time on BT Calgary yesterday sharing tips on buying original art. If you missed the segment, not to worry, you can watch it online. Here I am with Ted just before we went on air. Thanks to Glenn for snapping the photo and for all his help with getting set up!

In the midst of nerves and complete absent mindedness, we missed acknowledging the Herringer Kiss Gallery for providing the art (hangs head in shame). Thank you Deborah!

You’ll find more tips in the current issue of Dabble, Reality Check column.

I’m back!

Hello! I’ve been absent for a while and missing my blogging platform and social media friends. Work as been extremely busy so blogging has taken a bit of a backseat I’m afraid. I also just returned from a family vacation (more on that in blogs to come) and have now hit the ground running again. Kids are back to school tomorrow so today is going to be busy preparing for a crazy (but exciting!) week ahead.

I admit my head is spinning these days. So many things on my mind regarding work. Decisions to make, inspiring ideas I have that now require implementing, thoughts about where to take my business next, all the while wondering when I’ll find the time to sort through them and make the changes I want to. My office desk is clean but my head is full of virtual paperwork, a whirlwind of ideas and thoughts.

I’ve got a lot of exciting things coming up. Installations, photo shoots, an ‘on assignment’ trip to a tropical destination for Dabble Mag and of course the many fabulous projects I have on the go. I’ll be keeping you well informed along the way as I get back to regular postings.

Tomorrow, I’ll be on Breakfast Television talking more about buying original art as seen in the latest issue of Dabble. My segment is at 7:52am so tune in if you are able! I’ll be sharing more images on my blog and updating my portfolio with photos from this shoot later in the week so please check back.

Right after I’ll be racing home to finish preparing for a photo shoot with Avenue Magazine. I’ve been a busy little bee lately pulling the remaining details together and receiving my last delivery today, just in time! They’re shooting my lower level for the June issue so stay tuned.

weekend reading: dabble issue 7 is live!

I just finished reading the latest issue of Dabble cover to cover and I have to say it’s pretty fabulous. I’m enjoying some family vacation time but I’ll be back next week with more posts including additional photos from my Reality Check article on buying original art. I hope you’ve set aside some time this weekend to be inspired by the pages of issue 7. Enjoy!

how to: accessorize a coffee table

At one point the only accessory we had on our coffee table was a bumper pad around it to keep little ones safe from bumping their head on the glass. Coffee tables are a multi-purpose piece of furniture offering a surface for beverages, feet and at the same time a display for special books, ornaments and occasionally flowers. I was recently called in to work my magic with the finishing touches in several areas of a clients home. I snapped some quick shots (not styled to perfection) but with them wanted to offer some tips when selecting and placing accessories on your coffee table.

We started with a clean slate of a massive coffee table, 66″ square to be exact. Many accessories are required to not only fill, but play around with in order to achieve the best look. We wanted to keep a good amount of open space on the perimeter of the table because of wandering hands from the little ones in the family. There’s no need to keep your table bare when kids are present. Wise choices and careful selections will keep everyone in the house happy.

Because it’s a dark table, I started with lighter accessories on the bottom, layering white and coloured items together. I mixed shapes and textures, colour and pattern in a subtle and cohesive way. Notice the five white items (tray, box, large vessel, striped vase and shell), all different, yet work in harmony together. Boxes and canisters add ‘secret’ storage, while trays are both functional and beautiful.

Depending on the size of your table, books are a great source of conversation and a subtle way to share your family’s interests. Vases, also a functional and beautiful item, should look nice with and without flowers. Empty, clear glass vases are not the ideal accessory for your table. Choose ceramic, porcelain or coloured glass so the beauty of them stands alone.

Coffee table accessories will change often according to season, holidays and your stage of life so don’t take it too seriously and have fun with it!

bid on your favourite chair’ity chair

The final phase of the Urban Barn custom chair’ity competition is underway. The ‘likes’ have now turned into ‘bids’ so if you really do have a favourite chair, now is your time to open your wallet and get bidding. Each chair will be auctioned off with the money raised going to a charity of each designers choice.

My charity: the Neonatal ICU at the Rockyview General Hospital

Having a baby is overwhelming. Add complications and the stress and worry go through the roof. After our second daughter was born she spent the longest 24hrs of our family’s life in the Neonatal ICU to be treated for complications she experienced at birth. Once stabilized she spent another week in the nursery. For us it was a short time, for others it’s months under the watchful eyes of doctors and nurses until their little ones are ready to go home. The money raised from my chair will go to this unit in the hospital, not only as a thank you for the love and care we received but for the others who need it year after year. I can not express enough the appreciation and gratitude I have towards everyone who crossed our paths during our stay.

Click here bid for your favourite chair. Urban Barn will deliver anywhere in Canada for free. Please bid generously in support of many good causes and thank you to all of you who voted for and bid on my chair!

If you’d like to bid on mine (shown below) you can go directly to ebay by clicking here.

urban barn: custom ‘chair’ity competition

I am thrilled to share with you a little competition of sorts. Urban Barn has enlisted the help of five designers across Canada to customize a chair to be voted on and auctioned off with proceeds towards a charity of our choice. I am so pleased and excited to be part of this. On March 8th, I’ll also be hosting an event at the Westhills location of Urban Barn. If you’re in Calgary, I hope you’ll join me to learn more about the custom options Urban Barn offers through their upholstery line and a chance to ask any questions you might have. Your participation is greatly appreciated by voting for my chair!

We had a choice between three options: It was an easy one for me. I could see subtle details showing off the classic lines of the chair far left, and creating a modern with a twist feel. My goal was to create a chair able to fit into a modern, classic or traditional home. Colour is an important part of my designs so equally important here. I wanted to capture the essence of creating a custom piece showing how details make a difference.

It can be somewhat daunting when faced with a rack of fabric options as you see here. Urban Barn has their fabrics grouped according to colour, an easy way to narrow down the options quickly. Now for the legs. This is one of five pages of leg options. Who knew there were so many?!
I changed the leg style and also the finish selecting a light maple leg rather than a dark wood. Time for a change!

The finishing details…

Et voila! The final result:

Place your vote here! Would be thrilled if you voted for mine :)

The chair will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Neo Natal ICU at the Rockyview General Hospital. Hope to see you next Thursday March 8th for the in-store event! Space is limited. Details here.

happy birthday dabble!

It’s day two of the Design Bloggers Conference in LA and I’m having a fabulous time meeting and seeing several social media friends and of course taking in lots of great info.

It was one year ago today, (during the time of the first Design Bloggers Conference) Dabble Mag launched and I found myself on the cover of the magazine. Crazy right?! (Read more about the cover shot) It was a pretty surreal moment and a special day all around as we launched into an exciting adventure of design, travel and food experiences from around the globe. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be part of such an amazing team of people.

This opportunity is a testament to my blog and the power of social media as that is how my position in Dabble came to be. You just never know who is watching you!

For the next 30 days follow us as we share highlights from the year, AND there’s an exciting giveaway to celebrate dabble’s first birthday coming down the pipe. Stay tuned for details or watch City Line March 8th to learn how you can enter to win a price valued at more than $10,000.00!

dabble issue 6: kids bedrooms

Have you had a chance to check out Dabble Issue 6 yet? I hope so! This issue’s Reality Check is tackling Kid’s Bedrooms, offering tips and pointers on things you need to know before embarking on the task to meet the needs of your little ones no matter how old.

This bedroom belongs to my youngest daughter and for a long time it was the only completed room in the house. During the photo shoot of my bedroom for Dabble Issue 2, we had a slight delay while electricians hung my new swag lamps so Lori was quick to jump on the chance to snap shots of my girls. (You can see photos of my oldest daughters room here.)

The Sadie print from Serena and Lily was my jumping off point. I love the watermelon colour combination and the mix of patterns, but wanting to add my own touch, I introduced olive coloured polka dot sheet set from Pottery Barn that I mixed with the floral pattern. I also purchased fabric from Designer Fabrics for accent cushions and euro pillows. The petite patterned wallpaper is Designers Guild (a now discontinued print) which I used as an over sized head board, framed in wide moulding purchased from a local hardware store. I painted it matte black, added touches of silver then roughed it up with sandpaper. I attached a wall decal to give off a shadow-like visual from the chandelier.

Classic ‘headless’ shot of little ‘M’ by Lori Andrews.

The nightstands are also mismatched. The left night table is an old piece with a fresh coat of paint. I would say it acted as a telephone table at one point in time. The round one on the right is new and has a pedestal style base. I ordered this one without really realizing how much it was. Oops! Lets just say it’s a keeper ;)

The colour palette and style of this room has lasted for three years now and I don’t anticipate changing it for another three, it has so much longevity. Great for my pocketbook…not so great for my interest and desire to create and change things!

friday fashion files

It’s a long weekend here in Canada. Are you going anywhere, or up to anything fun and exciting? I’ve been loving all the NY Fashion Week posts and images roaming around the internet, in particular, I came across this collage of fashion inspiration from the JCrew Spring 2012 collection. Much like the board an interior designer would put together. What a perfect idea to plan outfits for a trip!

Hope your weekend is super stylish.
