project reveal: calgary elbow park, nyla free designs

The process of building a home from the ground up is extensive. The decision making starts immediately. Most overlook the value of an interior designer at the early stages of a project, to the point where decisions must be made based on what has already been built rather than what has been planned for. We were lucky enough to start working with this client before construction started which gave us ample time for potential changes and room for attention to detail.

Our clients knew clearly what they loved , however if there was a hint of uncertainty, they put their trust in us and moved to the next task. Decisions were made efficiently and with confidence. The outcome has personality plus, with daring elements, colour, pattern and texture all while creating a warm and friendly environment perfect for entertaining, loads of kids running in and out the door, or simply hanging out by the fire….a beautiful abode for a wonderful family. what’s on jamie’s desk?

Part of a day in the life of a working interior designer are the particulars on a desk. It tells a story of a work day, the ins and outs of the creative process and the important bits that we draw inspiration from day to day.

Here’s a look at what’s happening on Jamie’s desk today as she describes what’s inspiring her ~

what's on jamie's desk?

High Line book – depicts all plant and animal species present atop a disused New York Central Railroad, a favourite part of my visit to the big city.

Plants – I like air plants and tiny things.

Rocks/crystals – I am always collecting rocks from my places I’ve been around the world – I have rocks from various places in the Rockies, Europe, and India. I also have one crystal that sits on my desk as I am intrigued with its potential healing properties. It is a rutilated quartz which is said to be an energizing stone, helpful in stabilizing the metal process and clarifying thought patterns. Not to mention it looks pretty!

Laptop/ typography – I’ve been working on custom art pieces for a client, so I’ve been playing around with various texts etc.

Fabrics – we’re needing new chairs for our office meeting table. Thinking about possible fabric options here.

Glasses – I really should wear them more often :)

Ah, so fun. Thanks Jamie!

before and after: teen bathroom

A few years ago we embarked on the renovation of two bathrooms for a client, the master ensuite and kids bathroom. Both rooms were tired and the spaces was under utilized. The projects were unfortunately stunted by the flood of 2013 as their flooded basement required priority attention.

A year later we picked up where we left off and the demolition began. Both transformations are dramatic with floor to ceiling, wall to wall edits and reorganization. The kids bathroom lacked function and style. We had height restrictions for their tall teenage boys and not enough storage for their teen daughter. There was a depth concern with the toilet and how close it was to the tub/shower and one sink for the three kids was causing sibling chaos.

kids bathroom Our goal was to create a light and airy, modern bathroom suitable for three teenagers. We removed the tub and swapped the shower for the vanity to provide more height as well as depth for the toilet. We created a privacy wall of frosted glass allowing light to still flow through the space. The vanity was made wider to accommodate two sinks and provide plenty of additional storage. drawings The outcome is a light filled, spacious feeling bathroom. We used soft and subtle sea glass colours balanced by white and ivory, a fresh and calm approach to the often hectic time of getting ready in the morning. Here is the final result!

winter whites

There is something so calm and soothing about a winter white. Not to be mistaken by cold or stark, a winter white is anything but. Think rather, the cosy warmth of cashmere, the soft cast of low lying sunlight or the inner heat of a creamy London fog or latte. If there’s any level of warmth to winter, this is it.   winter white Image credits: cow l fireplace l tile l paris l tea cups l bowls l sweater l latte

2014 year in review

We’re back to work today after a wonderful and restful break. As we welcome a new year and say farewell to 2014 we can’t help but look back at our year with fond memories and accomplishments. It was a busy year right from the start and the intensity grew throughout the year. We learned, were inspired, made new connections and continued to build on our loyal relationships with clients and suppliers. We have been working hard to prepare for 2015 and the exciting projects we have in place currently and those still to come. Here’s a look a some of our favourite moments of last year. 2014 year in review

merry christmas and happy new year from nyla free designs

It’s funny how an idea evolves into something completely different and works out better than you imagined. That’s what I love about the creative process. Our one concept for Christmas cards turned into three. Jamie and I had so much fun styling and playing with the small details as our vision came to life. We hope you enjoy the time lapse we captured for the “making of” our cards as well as the outcome of three designs.

… and we wish you just that. A very MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR. See you in January!

Christmas inspiration

Did you know the Christmas tree symbolizes hope throughout the winter season? As well, hope in the promise that the rest of nature too will awaken to new life in the coming spring. We’ve had a few signs of fierce winter so far, but nothing compared to last year. It’s going to be a dry and brown Christmas and I’m ok with that. I don’t need snow for the spirit of Christmas to be alive and well.

Our oldest daughter was recently in Japan and while on a break from swimming ventured into a local shopping centre. While she told us the story of seeing Christmas trees on display and hearing Christmas music while wondering the shops, she remarked “Mom, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, it’s Christmas!”. These words resonated with me as we often focus so tightly on our immediate surroundings. Around the world people celebrate in their own way with traditions and festivities, but regardless the culture, religion or climate, my hope is the spirit of peace, love and kindness will surround you and your loved ones as you embrace this magical season of Christmas.

the ladies gift guide 2014

It’s getting down to the wire. For the most part we’re past the point of ordering online (unless you want to pay exorbitant shipping fees), malls are packed and patience is lower than the norm. Oh what fun it is….! I feel like I’m close. Oh so close. Will do an inventory this weekend and start wrapping – my favourite!

Whether for a friend, a mom, wife, sister or daughter, we’ve compiled a gift guide of items one may not necessarily purchase for themselves. And aren’t those are the best kind of indulgences? Hope you find this list helpful in your last minute dashing around for that special someone.

the teen gift guide 2014

I think I’m having the most fun shopping for our teenager, oddly enough. I dare say it’s getting to the point of needing to curb my spending. Now don’t get me wrong, she’s very particular and there’s a small amount of angst as I “hope she likes it!” each time I make a purchase. In my own teenage years, I remember placing my requested items on hold at each store so my mom could pick up with ease and of course not make a mistake in the selection process. Egads!

This list contains everything from the ultimate concert tickets to Taylor Swift’s 1989 world tour happening at a venue near you throughout 2015, all the way to a fabulously creative journal. I hope this gift guide provides some insight if you have a wonderfully moody and ever so particular teenager on you’re hands. May the odds be ever in your favour…

the mens gift guide 2014

I find guys amongst the toughest to buy for. Maybe because mine is, I put every other guy in the same category. Feel my pain? I asked my husband (who I will say is quite stylish) to provide shopping direction towards cool finds for guys and what’s topping the list. For your shopping convenience, he also made sure each item was available locally (for you Calgarians). Good luck!
