winter whites

There is something so calm and soothing about a winter white. Not to be mistaken by cold or stark, a winter white is anything but. Think rather, the cosy warmth of cashmere, the soft cast of low lying sunlight or the inner heat of a creamy London fog or latte. If there’s any level of warmth to winter, this is it.   winter white Image credits: cow l fireplace l tile l paris l tea cups l bowls l sweater l latte

2014 year in review

We’re back to work today after a wonderful and restful break. As we welcome a new year and say farewell to 2014 we can’t help but look back at our year with fond memories and accomplishments. It was a busy year right from the start and the intensity grew throughout the year. We learned, were inspired, made new connections and continued to build on our loyal relationships with clients and suppliers. We have been working hard to prepare for 2015 and the exciting projects we have in place currently and those still to come. Here’s a look a some of our favourite moments of last year. 2014 year in review

JANUARY: Jamie joined us full time!

FEBRUARY: we gained mid-century inspiration with fellow designers at Modernism Week.

MARCH: our big reveal of a dining room before and after.

APRIL: our wallpaper installer took on the challenge of installing this stunning Trove wallpaper.

MAY: we had a massive top to bottom installation at our clients lake house.

JUNE: we revealed a quick update to our clients chic closet.

JULY: we travelled to Vancouver for the installation of a new home and revealed a downtown condo.

AUGUST: the installation of our clients daughters bedroom had us all wishing we were 15 again.

SEPTEMBER: we transformed a tired chair from drab to fab for a chairLIFT charity fund raiser.

OCTOBER: style at home named us one of the top 10 designers to follow on instagram.

NOVEMBER: we embarked on a well loved task of decorating for Christmas.

DECEMBER: one of our favourite homes is set for the holidays and we photographed our own Christmas card.

We are looking forward to all that 2015 has in store. Last year certainly set the stage for many good things to come ~ positivity, creativity and opportunity are a few of the words we are embracing as we move into a new year. We hope you’ll join us!

merry christmas and happy new year from nyla free designs

It’s funny how an idea evolves into something completely different and works out better than you imagined. That’s what I love about the creative process. Our one concept for Christmas cards turned into three. Jamie and I had so much fun styling and playing with the small details as our vision came to life. We hope you enjoy the time lapse we captured for the “making of” our cards as well as the outcome of three designs.

… and we wish you just that. A very MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR. See you in January!

Christmas inspiration

Did you know the Christmas tree symbolizes hope throughout the winter season? As well, hope in the promise that the rest of nature too will awaken to new life in the coming spring. We’ve had a few signs of fierce winter so far, but nothing compared to last year. It’s going to be a dry and brown Christmas and I’m ok with that. I don’t need snow for the spirit of Christmas to be alive and well.

Our oldest daughter was recently in Japan and while on a break from swimming ventured into a local shopping centre. While she told us the story of seeing Christmas trees on display and hearing Christmas music while wondering the shops, she remarked “Mom, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, it’s Christmas!”. These words resonated with me as we often focus so tightly on our immediate surroundings. Around the world people celebrate in their own way with traditions and festivities, but regardless the culture, religion or climate, my hope is the spirit of peace, love and kindness will surround you and your loved ones as you embrace this magical season of Christmas.

the ladies gift guide 2014

It’s getting down to the wire. For the most part we’re past the point of ordering online (unless you want to pay exorbitant shipping fees), malls are packed and patience is lower than the norm. Oh what fun it is….! I feel like I’m close. Oh so close. Will do an inventory this weekend and start wrapping – my favourite!

Whether for a friend, a mom, wife, sister or daughter, we’ve compiled a gift guide of items one may not necessarily purchase for themselves. And aren’t those are the best kind of indulgences? Hope you find this list helpful in your last minute dashing around for that special someone.

the teen gift guide 2014

I think I’m having the most fun shopping for our teenager, oddly enough. I dare say it’s getting to the point of needing to curb my spending. Now don’t get me wrong, she’s very particular and there’s a small amount of angst as I “hope she likes it!” each time I make a purchase. In my own teenage years, I remember placing my requested items on hold at each store so my mom could pick up with ease and of course not make a mistake in the selection process. Egads!

This list contains everything from the ultimate concert tickets to Taylor Swift’s 1989 world tour happening at a venue near you throughout 2015, all the way to a fabulously creative journal. I hope this gift guide provides some insight if you have a wonderfully moody and ever so particular teenager on you’re hands. May the odds be ever in your favour…

the mens gift guide 2014

I find guys amongst the toughest to buy for. Maybe because mine is, I put every other guy in the same category. Feel my pain? I asked my husband (who I will say is quite stylish) to provide shopping direction towards cool finds for guys and what’s topping the list. For your shopping convenience, he also made sure each item was available locally (for you Calgarians). Good luck!

Sound fun? Up first we’ve enlisted the help of Jamie, our junior designer who also has a keen eye for fashion and lots of fabulous finds for that “20 something” stylish girl on your list . chairLIFT chair revealed!

The 2014 Calgary Home + Design Show invited us to participate in a charity initiative called ChairLIFT. We chose a chair from Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta’s ReStore and upcycled it using remnants of left over fabrics and a fresh coat of paint.

chairLIFTbefore Our chair selection was carefully considered and we got to work on selecting fabrics and finish options. We played with several Rustoleum paint colours and mixed fabrics to create a stylish chair with well appointed details. We are thrilled with the outcome! Take a look at how it all evolved.  chairLIFT chair, calgary home and design show, habitat for humanity, restore

Thank you to Rustoleum for donating the fabulous and easy to use product, our wonderful upholsterer Red Eight for donating their time in re-upholstering our chair, and to our lovely client for allowing us to use remnant bits of their left over fabric.  And of course, thank you to the Calgary Home + Design Show for inviting us to be part of this exciting charity fundraiser!
