Laundry Room Organization: Our Top 10 Tips

Is there a more thankless chore than laundry? You’ve no sooner emptied each basket and they start filling up again only to repeat the next laundry day. If you have young children this task seems never ending. We hear you!

When designing a home renovation project or custom new build, we put priority on creating a functional and stylish laundry room. We’re sharing our top 10 tips to help create yours!

1. Natural Light

Any opportunity to include a window in the laundry room is money well spent. Natural light is good for our mood, allows fresh air and sunlight during midday laundry tasks. Any connection with the outdoors feels good and a laundry room should not be overlooked.

2. Have Fun With Colour and Pattern

A laundry room is a great space to add a little fun and lighten up the task at hand. Colourful cabinetry or patterned tile are great ways to add interest to a utilitarian space.

3. Plenty of Surface Space

Whether for folding clothes or dealing with stubborn stains, counters are an asset when it comes to laundry rooms.

4. Hanging Rods

More and more clothes these days are required to hang dry, whether delicates, work out clothes or jeans. Providing even a small rod to accommodate items to hang is a great use of space and function.

5. Open and Closed Storage

Providing a combination of both closed and open storage means laundry detergent containers can be hidden and stylish baskets and containers exposed.

6. Clever Storage

There are so many ways to conceal functional elements these days. Ironing boards within drawers and flat drying racks on pull out shelves to name a few. Planning ahead with the minimum widths and depths will yield the best results in creating a stylishly functional laundry room.

7. Full Tile Backsplashes

Whether working out tough stains or hanging wet clothes, eliminating drywall is ideal for a laundry room. A fully tiled backsplash not only functions best, it also provides a level of personality and fun within the space.

8. Stylish Storage

Woven baskets, glass canisters, stylish hand soap pumps are all worthy of making their way into a laundry room. Chores need not be boring!

9. Put a Sink In It

If space permits, an undermount sink and single hole faucet are huge perks in a laundry room. Soaking stubborn stains or rinsing cloths, having a sink nearby is a great idea. Planning ahead is key as rough in’s will need to be considered early on.

10. Laundry Bins and Sorters

Large baskets and bins are ideal for sorting laundry. If space permits, having individual bins to separate colours, darks, whites and delicates is sure to make your laundry time efficient.

You don’t need a large space to have a functional laundry room or create big impact. Even a few of the above mentioned tips will yield great results for one of the most used, yet under designed spaces in a home. Not to mention making an everyday chore a little more enjoyable.
