Design Evolution: Staircase Renovation

Renovations can spiral. I can attest to this first hand. While this is another story altogether, I wanted to share a behind the scenes of our Killarney project and the evolution of the stairs. This infill has an open concept main floor with stairs along the side of the house, yet open to the dining area, so a clean visual was key. We knew this was necessary to include in the scope of work in order to bring it up to date with the rest of the main floor.

With two young children, and the basement used daily, our clients wanted to create an openness from the main floor to the basement so sound would travel better and light could filter down. Removing the drywall proved that we were able to open up the wall and add a railing. Not only did this check off all the boxes, it also added visual interest to the main floor and connected to the upgraded stairs to the second floor.

We made three main upgrades to the stairs once the wall was opened up resulting in a BIG change.

  1. Replaced the spindles.

  2. Upgraded the newel post and stained the hand rail.

  3. Applied a fresh coat of paint!

Also, the new spindles were able to go directly into the hardwood floor which is a lovely clean, and modern detail.

Talk about fresh! These simple updates make a world of difference and were definitely worth the investment to complete the overall look and feel. See more of this home on our portfolio page! Killarney Renovation
