7 Spring Cleaning Tips

Ahhhhhhhh, the sweet smell of spring. It’s a refreshing time of year, full of hope and newness. As the season changes outside, so too, should it change on the inside. The shift from winter to spring is a great time to refresh, clean and reorganize our homes as we welcome brighter days and warmer temps. Regular home maintenance is important in ensuring our investment lasts. Here are our top seven tips for spring cleaning!

1. BEDDING REFRESH

Spring is a great time to change your linens and lighten the layers. Update with linen sheets and/or duvet covers, and overall less layers. If you embrace darker, warmer colours for the winter, why not try a brighter, cooler colour palette for the spring/ summer seasons? Be sure to wash or dry clean heavier duvets, and blankets to store in preparation for the fall.

2. UPHOLSTERY UPHEAVAL

I’m always amazed at what makes its way underneath the cushions of a sofa. Lifting, flipping, and vacuuming cushions at least every 6 months is an important chore in taking care of upholstered items. If possible, remove cushion covers, and wash or dry clean for extra fabric love. If your piece is low to the ground be sure to lift and remove any gatherings of dust bunnies. The change of seasons is a great time to clean the ins and outs of upholstered goods.

3. WINDOW WASHERS

As the days get longer you’ll want the light to flood through your windows in the best way possible. Cleaning your windows, inside and out, will remove remnants of the winter season, accumulated dust on the inside, and yield the ability for brighter light to make its way into your home. I highly recommend having windows professionally cleaned, especially for the hard to reach areas.

4. MATTRESS MANEUVER

Did you know it’s better to rotate your mattress rather than flip it? Maintaining the life of your mattress comes with rotating it 180 degrees at least twice a year. Most mattresses are designed for comfort with a ‘right side up’ construction, therefore flipping isn’t beneficial. Rotating your mattress will spread out the wear and tear of sleeping in the same position every night, and protecting from premature damage.

5. APPLIANCE DEEP CLEAN

A thorough cleaning of your appliances should be done at least twice a year as regular maintenance. Get into the nitty gritty of your oven, cooktop and sinks. Self clean your oven and use stainless steel or glass cleaner for the exterior surfaces, and cooktop depending on the make. It’s also a great idea to remove the contents of your refrigerator, clean every shelf and compartment, discarding expired items as you reorganize. Not only does this give longevity to your appliances, but helps the units function better.

6. CLOSET PURGE

Time to move from sweater weather to open toes! Gather the chunky knits, wool pants and turtlenecks, and relocate them to a spare closet, if available. Set aside items to be tailored, dry cleaned or donated in the process. I like to organize my closet by type of clothing, blouses and tops, long hanging dresses, denim, blazers/ jackets and dress pants are grouped together for ease of outfit planning.

7. FIREPLACE FRESHEN-UP

With the winter months behind us, so is regular fireplace use. Clean the screens and glass, as well as perform general maintenance (if required) post winter. A fireplace is still a focal point even if not being used. Remove the build up of dust and grime that goes a little more unnoticed during the darker days. A microfibre, or cotton cloth is the best, no paper towel. Check with your fireplace provider for the best cleaner option for your unit.

Household chores are necessary in helping to maintain your home, and will make a world of difference in the visual aesthetic, and function of your rooms. Investing in your home comes from more than the initial purchase. Regular maintenance is a critical component to ensuring longevity, and beauty for years to come.

Happy Spring cleaning!
