Back to the Books

We’re just over a month into a new school year. Fresh binders, crisp lined pages, and sharp pencils are all in full use by now. Book spines are cracked, and the act of dog eared pages has begun. Whether you’re in school or not, books are a never ending source of information and inspiration, and certainly not just for students.

During the design development stage, shelving and storage (whether open or closed) becomes a discussion point in order for millwork to be designed and detailed accordingly. Open shelving is a wonderful way to bring personality to your home, showcasing collectibles for others to see.

When we move to the styling stage of a project, it’s time to bring the shelves to life. We love working with, and incorporating our clients books to style their shelves. If needed, we purchase new, based on their lifestyle, and interests however most of our our clients more often than not have extensive book collections making styling that much more fun to organize.

Below are some of our favourite bookshelf styling moments, along with tips to help you, get back to the books!

An empty bookshelf “before”.

The colour coded, styled bookshelf “after”.

The library from our Lakeview project has no shortage of books. This room was designed with books in mind, with no wall left without shelving to display their collection. We designed millwork wall to wall and floor to ceiling, even wrapping around the door frame. With design intentionality from the beginning, the books are most certainly the star of this room.

Incorporating books within a media unit is a great way to camouflage a television. In our Naramata guest wing of the house you can pick up a novel or take a moment to flip through a beautiful coffee table book, or two.

Hallways and landings are great areas to incorporate bookshelves, providing an opportunity to walk by on the daily. As you walk up the stairs to our Pumphill project you’re greeted a library wall and our clients book collection.

One Shelf, Three Ways

I’ve reorganized my shelves a time or two! I love switching them up, and giving the space a fresh feel every now and then. I recently gathered the majority of books in our home and played around with the look and feel in our living room open shelving. Here, I’m sharing three ways to organize books regardless of whether you’re a bookworm or not!

Colour:

Gather your book collection and organize by colour, regardless of topic.

Aesthetic:

Organize, and display your books alongside accessories and memorabilia to create a stylish bookshelf.

Genre/ Topic:

Group your books according to topic or genre for easy navigation when you’re on the hunt.

I’m not a huge novel reader, however I love books. My favourite are travel books, most specifically an atlas. I could flip through its pages all day, dreaming of far away places. I realized through this process, I also have many business books. which is also a passion of mine. I remain a scholar, even though I am no longer in school. I guess you could say however, we’re all in the school of life.

Happy reading!
