Before & After: Closet Makeover

We didn’t intend to update our girls bedrooms in any way. They were fine the way there were until we realized they weren’t.

Their rooms had walk-in closets that were large enough to walk into, however not big enough to really be usable, and function well. We decided midway through our upper floor renovation we would demo their closets and utilize the space better. We also updated their carpet.

Once the builder basic closets were removed, their rooms felt bigger and better. We wanted to keep costs in mind but still achieve good storage and a clean look, so we ventured off to IKEA.

As luck would have it, we found components that fit near perfectly in the space. The two closet doors, with an adjacent bank of drawers and open shelves were the perfect solution for both function and aesthetic.

By removing the old closet, we added over two feet of space to the room, a significant difference to the visual, and footprint of the space. As you can see by the before photo, it’s a world of difference.

While the overall hanging space is less, the utilization of the closet and allocation of storage is by far better. Plus, it’s a lot more interesting to look at!

I mentioned it was a “near” perfect fit, and with this, came a small amount of filler around the perimeter by our finishing carpenter. Because of the white drawers and open shelves, it looks like it’s simply part of the unit, rather than being an add on. It practically looks built-in.

Removing the previous closet not only provided better storage, it also offered more space to situate a desk to the right of the bed, a bonus considering we had just gotten rid of our home office space.

Even though it wasn’t a planned part of the renovation, this update was worth the time and money. While the cabinetry is IKEA, and a significant cost savings over custom, there was still labour to demo, clean up the walls (although they’re not perfect behind the unit), add a pot light, and install the closet. There’s a time and a place for IKEA, and this was the perfect solution!
