Confessions Of An Interior Designer: Why We Don't Share Product Information

We are regularly asked about where we’ve sourced product from, whether on instagram or directly via email. Inquiring minds are eager to know where they too, can purchase the items we’ve selected for our clients. This topic is filled with opinion and expectation. There are many things to consider within the realms of sharing our sources, so we thought an excerpt from Nyla’s Notebook would be a great way to shed light on this subject matter. Stay with us! There’s a lot to cover.

WHY WE DON’T SHARE DETAILS:

1. Clients invest in our services.

This is the number one reason we refrain from sharing information.

We’re hired by clients to design and create homes they feel good in, whether a new home build, renovation, or furniture and decor. This extends all the way from the finishes and materials, through to fabrics and finishings. Clients invest in us to source, detail, and specify all aspects of a project, that are perfectly suited to their home, aesthetic and budget. This takes time, creativity and thought.

Sharing the details of a particular item means we’d be giving this information away for free, without context as to where it’s going, why it was chosen, who lives in the home, or what the other items are within the room.

Building relationships and getting to know each client is a core value of our business, and with this comes confidentiality. Our designs are carefully curated and selected for each client, in a thoughtful way.

2. Our designs are tailored to each client.

Rarely do we repeat selections from project to project. If we do, it’s a different colour, or slight variation one to the next. Each and every one of our clients is unique, meaning we’re selecting product specific to their lifestyle, budget and aesthetic, no one else’s.

Selections have also been made based on multiple other items & accompanying elements. We don’t make a single selection without considering it alongside many other components of the room, whether that be furniture, lighting or finishes and materials.

We spend a lot of time getting to know our clients. Engaging in relationships means we’re wholeheartedly working to make specific selections for each and every project.

3. What’s right for one project is not right for another.

Whether a light fixture, tile, or piece of furniture, there are many reasons as to why a particular item has been specified. We look at many factors in making selections, and while the chandelier might look great in our clients space, it may be completely wrong in someone else’s. Here are a few things we consider when making selections:

  • confirmed dimensions

  • wattage

  • scale

  • aesthetic

  • budget

  • maintenance & durability

  • fabric content

  • client’s lifestyle - do they have dogs, kids etc.

Providing the details of any item comes without thoughtfully taking into consideration the space around it, as well as client lifestyle, undermines the value, and investment of time to select it.

4. Custom furniture & trade only access.

We do a lot of custom furniture, and with this, there’s really no information to share. Each piece has been specifically designed and detailed for our client right down to the fabric choice, comfort, and fit.

Many of our sources are trade only, meaning only industry professionals have access to the products.

5. This is one of the many values we bring to our clients.

Making thoughtful selections specifically for our clients is part of our value. Through this process we offer creativity, design sensibilities, and ideas to create a home as unique as each of our clients. The result is a cohesive space, with all design elements considered together, and a home our clients feel good in. Sharing information undervalues our value with respect to the investment our clients have made to bring their home to life.

EXCEPTIONS

  • Brand Partnerships

From time to time, we align ourselves with likeminded brands where a partnership is a great opportunity to share ideas and insight into a certain product. We love promoting products we love, and when the opportunity presents itself we’re happy to do so.

  • Nyla’s Home

With respect to my own home, I’m happy to share details of product whether furniture or lighting, as well as finishes and materials. Ask away!

  • Published Projects

If one of our projects has been published in a magazine, it’s more than likely had the details shared with respect to products and sources. While it’s still case specific, the information is usually already out there in some fashion.

WHAT DO WE SHARE?

Paint Colours

There are hundreds of thousands of paint colours, and since we have our go-to’s, we’re happy to share. It’s important to understand a particular colour may not be the right selection for you. Paint colours look different in every home. The city, direction of light, natural vs. artificial light, and supporting elements of the room all affect a paint colour, and how it will ultimately look in a home. With the vast number of options, and variables, please carefully consider the selection in your own home, prior to committing.

SO WHY DO WE TAG BRANDS & NOT SHARE DETAILS?

  • Tagging benefits us from a brand building, collaboration and exposure perspective.

  • Tagging benefits our suppliers and brands as through this, they can see their product as a project progresses or in a finished space.

  • Tagging celebrates, and recognizes all of those involved in a project.

By no means are tags meant to provide consumers with information to purchase. If one digs deep enough however, you’re sure to find the product details you’re looking for.

Each and every one of our projects has a combination of retail, trade, custom, and one of a kind furniture items. A lot of thought and consideration goes into each selection, resulting in tailored spaces, and rooms that feel unique. Whether furniture, lighting or finishes and materials, we protect all project information on behalf of our clients. It’s a strict policy and one we will continue to adhere to. We do respond to every inquiry and hope you’ll understand if we don’t provide the requested information.

If you’re interested in learning more about our process, and areas we bring value, we’d love to connect, and learn more about you, and your project!
