family living
After spending more time than usual in their home during Covid, our clients realized they could enjoy it more if the function was carefully considered.
With many closed off rooms, the goal was to open up the main floor, creating a better flow from one room to the next. Our clients also emphasized the need for a home fit for family hangouts and entertaining.
A peek into the process
The house was gutted with careful consideration to its heritage. Challenges included reinforcing the floors for heavy stone and appliances, as well as navigating 11 different ceiling heights throughout the main floor.
Light woods and paint colours as well as neutral furniture and fabrics were at the forefront of the interior design. Durability and maintenance friendly was also key in our decisions when bringing the home to life.
The result
Transformation Highlights
In this Calgary inner city renovation, the home was thoughtfully reworked to feel more open, connected, and intuitive — designed to support everyday family life while welcoming gathering with ease.
process
Once we established the new layout, and a general idea of the finishes and materials, our client removed themselves, offering their full trust in us navigating the renovation process for them. They went as far as not entering the home in the final stages in order to experience a full reveal of their new home.
fun fact
We found The Saturday Evening Post from September 26th, 1914 in the walls during construction. We sent it away for preservation and framed six pages to hang on the living room walls as artwork.
challenges
There were over 11 different ceiling heights thanks to various renovations over the past 100 years. With the house down to its studs we were able to streamline the ductwork and reduce the number of ceiling heights down to 5!
