PROJECT REVEAL: Country House Sitting Room

A living room is a room in a house for general and informal everyday use.

family room is an informal, all-purpose room in a house.

great room is a room inside a house that combines the roles of several more traditional rooms (e.g. the family room, the living room, the study, etc.) into one space.

So what the heck is a sitting room?

sitting room is a room in a house where people sit and relax.

Yes. Please.

Aren’t we all looking for a place to sit and relax?! Sounds like somewhere I’d like to hangout at the end of each day, or Saturday mornings, or when a girlfriend comes over for coffee or a glass of wine. Since integrating this concept into our Country House project this is my new favourite room.

Situated directly across from the kitchen, in the heart of the main living area, amidst stone fireplace and comfortable chairs is a warm, inviting sitting room. Specifically designed for a family of four, who simply love to be together, spend time with friends and family and embrace the solitude of life in the country.

There is a great room in this home as well, complete with a sectional for lounging, large coffee table, TV and relaxed family living. The sitting room arguably promotes conversation and quality time together.

With the concept of the adjacent “not so kitchen, kitchen”, spending time in the sitting room doesn’t feel as though you’re in the midst of a utilitarian space, however one that feels warm, inviting and a place you could hang out, relax in all day.

Whether grabbing a snack, doing homework, reading a book or enjoying a conversation, consider the concept of a sitting room in your home!
